POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of an R&D Supervisor or other qualified R&D staff member, the R&D Technician performs a wide variety of tasks and operations that are required to assemble and test Medical Device products in an FDA regulated environment. The R&D Technician will troubleshoot, maintain, and assemble all production equipment under R&D control, as required. The R&D Technician will also assist engineers on projects, repairs, and installations, as necessary. All operations will be carried out in compliance with GMPs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), BOMs, and other LENSAR standards.
In addition to performing the responsibilities/tasks below, the R&D Technician will need to demonstrate the following traits:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assemble, integrate and test components, subassemblies and final assemblies.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain (calibration & preventative maintenance), and perform testing to support R&D functions.
  • Complete relevant paperwork following GMP guidelines.
  • Assist in developing methods and procedures to control or modify the manufacturing process.
  • Review and revise pertinent documentation as appropriate.
  • Perform all documentation and clerical functions to provide the proper accountability and traceability of development functions.
  • Train new technicians as necessary.
  • Perform cleaning and housekeeping duties.
  • Other duties as assigned which includes working in other departments.
KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS / EDUCATION

Required Items:
  • Proficiency in the English language - reading, writing, and verbal communication.
  • Must be able to successfully pass all job-related tests and certifications required for working in a GMP, quality environment including but not limited to: inspections and GMP requirements to perform essential functions of the job. Must re-qualify every year on all job-related tests and certifications as job or qualifications require.
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND graduate of a two-year Associates Degree program in Electrical/Mechanical/ Optical Technology (or equivalent).
  • Must be able to read and follow mechanical and electrical schematics, follow work instructions, BOMs and other product related documents. Must have experience with equipment such as Oscilloscopes, DVMs, Power meters, Detectors, Profilometers, UV curing systems, and basic hand tools.
  • Must be computer literate, including ability to interface with computer systems. Must be comfortable working with Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), navigating through web pages and e-mail. Must possess basic typing skills.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed and must be able to travel as needed.
Preferred Items:
  • Minimum of 3 years (within the last 7 years) experience in the operation and integration of complex medical device equipment in a regulated environment. Target industries include pharmaceutical, biotechnology, biomedical, electronic, laser, and/or other medical industries.
  • At least 3 years extensive experience with the alignment and assembly of optical assemblies and devices, especially lasers.
    Comfortable with electronic and electro-optical test and measurement systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the R&D Technician’s job. The employee must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift up to 45 pounds. This may require using one’s own hands and arms in handling, positioning, manipulating and moving materials.
