Organization Description

Founded in 1988, the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) has a mission to build community and inspire positive social change through support and services for LGBTQ2IA youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. LYRIC operates as an in-person direct service community center for LGBTQQ youth ages 14-24. LYRIC is not a community activist organizing workplace. The organization offers various branches of programming for youth including in-school Q groups, youth leadership internships, mentorship, housing navigation, health access, mental health referral, and more. 

Position Summary

We are hiring for a Program Coordinator position for our direct service Programs. The primary role will be group facilitation across our youth Programs. The various Programs are School Based Initiative Program, Youth Leadership Program, Career Development Programming, and After School Drop In. To ensure our services reach our youth, this position is expected to work 5 days in person. This position will also meet 1:1 with youth to assist them in fulfilling their goals. 

LYRIC operates on a short term goal setting of 2-4 weeks. If a youth has longer term goals, they should be referred to work with a Youth Advocate, or access resources at another organization, while you continue to work with them in other capacities. Additionally, if youth are seeking services that LYRIC cannot provide, we refer them to partner organizations to get their needs met. This way we’re able to serve as many youth as possible while expanding their network of resources.

The person applying for this role should feel comfortable and confident facilitating curriculum in front of groups of young adults ages 14-24. This position will also need to develop curriculum to educate our youth around queer history, social justice topics, workforce development, and assist the youth in executing a culminating event to conclude their Program. Strong administrative skills, organizational and workforce skills are needed for this position. Data entry, communication with schools and community providers, and other administrative skills are expected in this position. This position offers a unique opportunity to workz on various topics, projects, and curriculum that interests and affirms our youth and their communities. 

The Program Coordinator position is in a bargaining unit represented by OPEIU Local 29.

Duties

Responsibilities

  1. Rotate between Programs to assist and lead when needed 
  2. Conduct program outreach, interviews, and program curriculum for youth interns
  3. Provide accurate documentation for all services provided to youth
  4. Develop strength-based, social justice-centered programming
  5. Work with youth to develop and complete personal goals
  6. Run intern selection process including applications and interviews
  7. Maintain database of youth records and information
  8. Conduct one-on-one check ins with youth to assist in working towards their goals
  9. Supervise and manage intern final projects
  10. Coordinate educational scholarships intern payments
  11. Handle budgeting for supplies, materials, and independent contractors
  12. Refer interns to other wings of programming for broader support as needed
  13. Support the planning and implementation of each internship cohort
  14. Develop and execute outreach strategies
  15. Attend staff meetings as well as other organizational retreats and gatherings
  16. Play an active role in shaping the Health & Wellness Team’s strategic plan for promoting community wellness
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Able to commit 2 years to this role 
  2. Understanding of positive youth development framework, youth-adult partnership frameworks and knowledge of LGBTQQ youth issues
  3. Understanding of social justice, restorative justice, and systems change
  4. Knowledge of San Francisco and Bay Area resources, especially for LGBTQQ youth, youth of color and their families
  5. Broad and deep knowledge of LGBTQQ community and issues impacting LGBTQQ youth
  6. This person is flexible, adaptable, and able to jump into varying programming to facilitate, check in with youth, work on projects, etc. 
  7. Skilled in multitasking, working on multiple projects, all while staying organized
  8. Strong professional boundaries when working with youth to foster supportive and clear roles to better their development 
  9. Commitment to youth work, doing what needs to be done so youth can experience quality Programming
  10. Able to work 5 days in person
  11. Collaborative worker who’s a team player and can also work well independently
  12. Strong work ethic 
  13. Able to learn and organize information quickly to utilize later
  14. Strong office administration skills 
  15. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  16. Familiar with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Slides, Voice, etc.)
  17. Fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish, highly desirable

Experience

  1. Two years of experience providing case management, counseling, housing services, family support, advocacy, educational services, resource navigation or workforce development services to youth
  2. Experience with diverse models of working with youth (i.e. understanding of principles of youth development, youth-adult partnership, harm reduction, positive sexuality, HIV/STI prevention)
  3. Experience working with transgender youth, young women, youth of color, youth with disabilities, young men who have sex with men (YMSM), youth living with HIV, system-engaged youth, immigrant communities, youth engaged in sex work, youth who are homeless / marginally-housed, and other historically marginalized groups
  4. Experience working with families of LGBTQQ youth
  5. Competent in working in a multiracial, multicultural, multi-gendered, and intergenerational environment
  6. Experience with data collection and reporting
  7. Experience working in an office and administrative settings
  8. Experience facilitating to groups of young adults 
  9. Experience developing effective collaborations with other agencies and communities

  8. Ability to address challenges directly by de-escalating conflict and fostering mutual understanding
  9. Able to create and maintain strong boundaries with youth and other staff members 
  10. Commitment to ongoing one’s self-improvement/professional development and LYRIC’s long-term sustainability
  11. Ability to work evenings and weekends as required

Compensation

This position is full-time and non-exempt. The starting salary is $30.58 hourly . This rate is non-negotiable. LYRIC uses an equity-based model of compensation; we offer a fixed pay rate for staff according to position and tenure with an annual pay increase, pending board budget approval.
