Latin School of Chicago has a need for a full-time Upper School History & Social Studies Teacher beginning in fall 2024.
EXPECTATIONS INCLUDE:
  • Work on a team of three to four 9th-grade world history teachers by attending team meetings, following a course pacing guide, giving feedback on the curriculum, and collaborating on assessments.
  • Teach 4 classes per semester
  • 2-3 sections of 9th-grade world history
  • One or more electives for 10th or 12th-grade students
  • Serve as a co-advisor to 8-12 students for their entire upper school career; counsel advisees on academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Commit to developing connections with students beyond the classroom by attending events, performances, or games; sponsoring a club, sport, or attending an affinity group
  • Commit to participating in professional development by participating in a Professional Learning Community (PLC)
  • Attend required meetings (division, department, all-school); complete duties such as supervision of the student learning commons
  • Co-chaperone an experiential learning Project Week that is either in or out of town for 8-16 students and one other Latin teacher
  • Write student narratives two times a year during 1st and 3rd quarters to update families on students' progress
  • Use Standards-Based Assessment and modal grade calculations in all courses.
  • Be observed and evaluated by the department chair and Division Director to ensure teaching and curriculum are engaging and support student learning
Dispositions of Need:
  • A flexible, cooperative, collaborative, diplomatic, proactive individual who is open to receiving feedback, agile and responsive to the changing needs of students and colleagues; enthusiastic to take student meetings before or after school or during free blocks, a team player who supports departmental and divisional initiatives as well as Latin's Statement of Teaching and Learning.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education, or related content field is preferred. Bachelor's degree is minimum requirement.
  • 3-5 years experience teaching history in a secondary school setting preferred
  • Interest in teaching World History
  • Able to use the Google suite platform and Canvas for communication, grading assessments, keeping grades, student digital portfolios, and curriculum. Applicants need not be at an expert level in these programs but must have strong tech skills and a desire to learn.Must be flexible to using standards-based assessment for common assessments
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a history of teaching world history, and economics.
