Save Family Farming is a dynamic and mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of family farming through advocacy, outreach, and public education. We believe that family farming is a cornerstone of sustainable agriculture, local economies, and food security. Our work focuses on providing resources, advocacy, and support to reach out to the non-farming public to build a better understanding of what family farmers are doing to grow great food in a way that consumers today now expect.

We are seeking a proactive, self-initiator, collaborator, and coalition builder as Executive Director to lead our Family Farming Preservation Initiative. The Executive Director will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing strategies that promote the viability, resilience, and growth of family farming communities. This leadership position offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on rural livelihoods, agricultural diversity, and environmental sustainability.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership, Planning and Management

    Strongly upholds the guiding principles of Save Family Farming.

    Evaluates programs and services in relation to goals and recommends modifications.

    Consistently ensures implementation of plans and policies adopted by the board, including development of an annual work plan.

Financial Planning and Management

    Maintains financial health of the organization based on standards set by board.

    Develops and directs revenue generating plans aimed at increasing earned and contributed income.

    Works with the board to secure adequate funding for operations.

Public Relations, Outreach, Education Planning and Management

    Serves as the face of the organization and point of contact, including representing the organization at various events and meetings.

    Builds and maintain relationships with journalists and media channels

    Oversees development of plans that engage stakeholders and promote the organization, its programs and services, and its messages.

Advocacy Planning and Management

    Develops and implements plans for communicating about issues and addressing them.

    Researches policy issues; develops current, factual background information to support position on issues.

    Regularly summarizes and synthesizes issues, status, and organization’s efforts.

Human Resources Planning and Management

    Determines all staffing requirements within budget, and retains an engaged, qualified staff.

    Supervises, directs, disciplines, and evaluates staff in the performance of their duties.

    Provides coaching, growth, and professional development opportunities.

Required Technical Competencies:

    Bachelor’s degree in communications or similar relevant field; OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience

    Experience writing and developing content for a public audience

    Familiarity with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office programs

    Experience with agriculture beneficial

Required Knowledge Areas and Skills:

    Exceptional organizational, time management, and prioritization skills

    Excellent, persuasive communications skills

    Exceptional written and verbal communication capacity

Education, Certifications and Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

    Experience as a nonprofit executive director preferred, or other relevant organizational leadership roles

    Farm-related background preferred

    Familiarity with government affairs and the Washington legislative process preferred

    English/Spanish bilingualism preferred

Working Conditions:

This is a state-wide position requiring travel, remote work including frequent on-line collaboration and meetings. Washington drivers license and access to their own transportation required. The job will require ability to lift and carry 25 pounds and be able to travel by foot across uneven terrain.

Starting Salary: $80,000-$130,000/year DOE
