Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
The Assistant Director of Student Success Services is a full-time professional staff position in the Office of Student Success responsible for providing direction to students seeking institutional support services and programs that contribute to their continued enrollment and academic success at Lamar University. The Assistant Director will be responsible for monitoring incident/issue reports submitted via the university’s Incident Reporting System. The Assistant Director will serve as a student advocate for escalating questions or concerns generated from these and other reports relating to academic service needs, as well as enrollment and reenrollment matters to the appropriate institutional point of contact and/or office. This position will manage a student success team assisting students, conducting retention efforts, and collaborating with college student support teams. Additionally, this position provides guidance to students in understanding institutional policies and procedures pertinent to academic progression and academic standing. The Assistant Director of Student Success Services may be assigned to serve as point of contact for students enrolled in an academic college, along with affiliated faculty and administration.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
  • Communicate with students on the institutional resources available to help address questions or concerns relative to their academic and student service needs.
  • Refer instances of student need and concern submitted via the university’s Incident Reporting System to the appropriate institutional office and point of contact.
  • Identify and keep current record of academic and campus resources that contribute to student retention, persistence, and degree completion.
  • Supervisory responsibility for Cardinal Success Coaches housed within the Office of Student Success.
  • Communicate with students on matters related to their academic standing, particularly those students seeking assistance in interpreting institutional policy related to probation and suspension status.
  • Collaborate with academic and student services personnel in identifying, developing, and/or executing programming and initiatives contributing to student retention, persistence, and degree completion.
  • Communicate with academic units, support service offices, faculty, and staff in helping to identify, develop, and assess resources, practices, and policies relevant to student retention needs.
  • Utilize EAB Navigate, Banner, Degreeworks, and similar systems in assisting with students’ questions and concerns.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Student Success in tracking and evaluating student advocacy and assistance efforts utilizing intake and referral data.

Job Conditions:
  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift 25 lbs. and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing and walking between buildings; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • At least three (3) years of experience in academic advising, academic services, student support services, case management or related experience.
