PRO BONO STAFF ATTORNEY, MACOMB COUNTY – Mt. Clemens, MI
Organization Overview:
Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual
assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore
provides free direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice,
and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include
housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.

Position Overview:
Lakeshore Legal Aid is seeking a Pro Bono Staff Attorney to act as the primary point of contact for
private attorneys and others seeking to provide legal services to low-income persons, support the pro
bono work of the private attorneys, and provide direct legal representation to individual clients and low-
income client groups. This role will spend approximately 80% of their time dedicated to pro bono efforts
and 20% of their time handling casework. The position will report directly to the Pro Bono Director
regarding their pro bono responsibilities and to the Litigation Supervisor in their office in relation to
casework.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely civil legal services to low-income and senior clients and client groups through

representation in trial courts, appellate courts and other forums, through litigation, advice,
negotiation, drafting and review of legal documents, referrals and administrative advocacy.

  • Provide support to private attorneys to ensure they provide timely civil legal services to low-

income and senior clients and client groups through representation in trial courts, appellate
courts and other forums, through litigation, advice, negotiation, drafting and review of legal
documents, referrals and administrative advocacy.

  • Recruit and provide ongoing mentorship to Pro Bono Attorneys. Regularly attend and participate

in local, state, and specialty bar committees and events.

  • Identify cases for direct placement with volunteer attorneys.
  • Develop and carry out pro bono projects and clinics in accordance with the needs of Lakeshore

and interest of the volunteer attorneys.

  • Coordinate pro bono training and volunteer recognition programs.
  • Serve Lakeshore clients in a holistic and client-centered manner.
  • Ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Communicate and establish contacts with court, community agencies, local and state bar

associations, and local client groups as appropriate. Act as a resource to such groups when
appropriate.

  • Participate in groups, taskforces, or associations whose activities substantially affect Lakeshore

Legal Aid’s work and the legal rights of low-income persons.

  • Create and/or deliver presentations to community groups on legal services related topics.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the supervising attorney, a director, CEO, or a

CEO designee.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Graduated from an accredited law school.

  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan, or an application at the first opportunity for

admission by reciprocity, or by taking the first available bar exam.

  • Demonstrated interest in the area of poverty law and working with low-income individuals. Able

to communicate effectively, be empathetic and understand the diverse clients of the poverty
community.

  • Ability to deal effectively with all people under difficult circumstances.
  • Demonstrable skills in litigation, advocacy, interviewing, and drafting legal documents.
  • Understand and comply with the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Dependable transportation for travel to intake sites, hearings, meetings and trainings.
  • Experience or aptitude working with appropriate office technology, including telephone

systems, copiers, word processing, report generation software, internet research, client
database, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and includes excellent benefits including medical, dental,
