Lake Forest Library is Hiring a Youth Services Librarian Near Forest, IL

Lake Forest Library is seeking a full-time Youth Services Librarian committed to providing excellent youth fiction collection development and offering friendly, fun, and innovative programs at the Library and offsite. The successful candidate will work effectively with the public and library staff members and be dedicated to stellar customer service to children and their caregivers. The position requires someone who is able to cheerfully take direction as well as work independently. The Lake Forest Library’s mission places the library as the cornerstone of literacy in our community where everyone is respected and free to pursue a lifelong love of reading and learning. Job Duties Include:

  • Developing and presenting fun and innovative programs and activities, that are responsive to the needs and interests of the community, with a special emphasis on serving preschool and youth patrons
  • Encouraging library use and program attendance through active community outreach, offsite programming, and engagement
  • Developing and maintaining assigned collection areas via selection and weeding following standard library procedures and goals
  • Providing reference and reader’s advisory services in all formats to children and caregivers
  • Staffing the Children’s Services Desk, including performing circulation functions such as registration, checkout, and check-in
  • Basic library technology instruction and troubleshooting for patrons of online resources and library hardware
  • Performing library and department opening and closing procedures
  • Keeping the department in good order via shelf-reading as assigned and straightening areas as needed
  • Registering patrons for programs
  • Enforcing library policies

Requires:

  • MLS, MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) (Master of Library and Information Science), or MALS (Master of Library Science) degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited graduate school
  • Knowledge of standard collection development
  • Knowledge of youth literature, resources, technology, and services
  • Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and current automobile insurance
  • Must pass a background check

Desirable:

  • Experience working with youth in a public library setting
  • Expertise in developing and delivering innovative and relevant youth programs and services
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to use library software, MS Office, and library online resources
