LaGrange Association Library is Hiring a Youth Program Assistant Near Lagrangeville, NY

The LaGrange Association Library is seeking an energetic, flexible, and creative person to fill a new part-time Youth Program Assistant position in our beautiful, new Children’s Room! If you have the skills and passion for working with children, this job is for you.

Working with the Youth Services Coordinator under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Youth Program Assistant creates, coordinates, publicizes, and facilitates library programs for children from birth through age 12. Programs may include story times, crafts, STEM & STEAM offerings, finger play, music, and co-coaching our middle school team in the annual Mid-Hudson Library System Battle of the Books competition. This person assists youth and families in the Children’s Room with informational needs, reader’s advisory, and use of the early literacy computers and tablets.

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • the ability to interact positively with patrons and children
  • the ability to establish relationships with children and parents
  • to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • good knowledge of youth literature
  • a strong interest in child development and early literacy
  • good judgment, initiative, tact, courtesy, and a sense of humor
  • the ability to represent the Library positively at community and county events
  • the ability to perform outreach for collaboration with community organizations
  • proficiency in Canva or Publisher to create appealing program and book display literature
  • basic computer skills
  • the physical ability to stand for long periods, lift, crouch, and stoop

Highly desirable:

  • library experience
  • ability to play piano or guitar
  • sewing and/or crocheting skills

This position is 25 hours per week including one evening. Occasional Saturdays required as dictated by program and staffing needs. Salary is $17-$18 per hour, depending on the candidate’s education/experience, with three (3) flex days upon hiring; sick, vacation, and personal days upon one (1) year anniversary.

Required: Associate’s Degree or higher in Education, Library Science, English or closely related field plus one (1) year of experience performing duties related to the supervision, coordination and administration of programs or curriculum development for youth.

OR

A high school diploma or GED plus three (3) years of early childhood/elementary teaching experience or working with youth in a library, school, day care, or similar setting.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
