The Role:

The Associate Counsel will report to and work closely with the Chief Employment and Industrial Relations Counsel in providing legal support to the Company on a wide variety of employment, labor and/or benefits issues, supporting all of the Company’s business units and resource units. The role is expected to autonomously handle employment issues, and to provide support on labor and/or benefits matters as needed.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
  • Provides day to day employment advice and counseling on matters such as leaves of absence; hiring; discipline; terminations; contingent labor; use of social media; job classifications; performance; wage and hour compliance; restrictive covenants; immigration; unfair labor practice charges; and reductions in force.
  • Responds to charges of discrimination and other Agency inquiries;
  • Responds to demand letters;
  • Drafts and edits Company policies, procedures and/or guidelines as needed;
  • Drafts and revises employment-related agreements including severance agreements, retention agreements and non-compete agreements;
  • Assists outside counsel with litigation including responding to discovery requests;
  • Provides research on various employment, labor and/or benefits matters as needed;
  • Keeps apprised of developments in employment and labor law and evolving best practices;
  • Counsel and conduct preventive law training as requested or necessary;
  • Provides practical legal advice and guidance on accomplishing business objectives while managing legal risk and cost.
  • Coordinates with Regional Legal Counsel and Business Unit Counsel to provide legal services efficiently and effectively to the Company’s global business units.
  • Develops a wide variety of general counseling skills by being able to identify and analyze issues in employment matters.
  • Success in this role requires the Associate Counsel – Employment to consistently demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Active interest in continued professional development through the solicitation and participation in formal and informal learning activities, such as continuous legal education, participation on committees and/or the pursuit of assignments involving the opportunity to work with different attorneys, with different businesses and/or on new work content;
  • Practical problem-solving approach with the application of logic, formal education, research and training to the legal analysis and the development of solutions;
  • Ability to draft in a manner that is clear, precise, and appropriately detailed for the audience and intended purpose;
  • Ability to provide clear direction to the client regarding legal advice and Company policies and procedures;
  • Ability to advocate with the appropriate degree of confidence;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and interact with a diverse group of clients, peers, support staff and team members;
  • Ability to effectively perform both as an individual contributor and as a member of a team;
  • Desire to ‘solve the problem’ and ‘add value’ with an understanding of how an assignment fits into a larger transaction, strategy, or initiative;
  • Ability to determine when to solicit the perspectives, experiences, and expertise of others to ensure and check understanding and minimize mistakes;
  • Professionalism, including the management of confidential information;
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships within the company's Legal Department and contacts within resource units and/or business units associated within their area of practice.

Requirements

Law degree (JD) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and is currently a member in good standing of the bar of a State, a Territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Minimum 3 years as a practicing employment lawyer working for a law firm or corporate legal department.
Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
This position entails access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled items and employment offers are conditioned upon an applicant’s ability to lawfully obtain access to such items.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with unionized employees and the NLRB;
