College Assistant-
Schedule: Saturdays (during Fall, Winter & Spring); Monday - Thursday (Summer).
Hours may vary anytime between 8am-4pm.
The College Assistant is responsible for serving as a group leader, children’s group counselor, as well as supporting the teacher with lesson delivery, student activities/exercises, and classroom management. The College Assistant is responsible for supervision of students with attention to all of the following in an effort to foster program success, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development and intellectual growth.
● Report to assigned Program Coordinators.
● Actively participate and assist teachers in delivering lessons, activities and exercises while engaging students. Lead and supervise safe and organized activities in the assigned program area while fostering a safe and healthy environment. Promote student participation in all activities.
● Help to plan and create innovative age-appropriate activities and supports the development of lesson plans to conduct in-class, read, tell stories, lead songs, activities, exercises and games.
● Be concerned for the social adjustment of EACH child. Voice/share any identified learning matters to teachers or administration to better support the student’s learning experience.
● Monitor and maintain accurate program documentation (i.e.: student attendance, incident reports, accident reports, behavior reports).
● Supervise and transport groups of students to planned activity locations across campus while maintaining safety and fostering clear, professional communication.
● Distribute and collect parent/student surveys, notices or other documents and items, as needed.
● Actively participate in and attend all orientations, training sessions, designated meetings and special events.
● Support and assist in cleanup during sign-in, meal times, all activities and dismissal. Monitor students during lunch. Sit with children at lunch, when possible, to ensure their social-emotional wellbeing.
● Keep immediate supervisors informed daily of any concerns or problems regarding students, facilities or other. Work with the CFK coordinators, directors and other Continuing Education staff to identify dilemmas and remedy difficulties in regard to facilities, programs and children.
● Adhere to all NYC Department of Health and NYS State Central Registration standards and clearances. Adhere to all CUNY and KCC policies.
● Demonstrate and maintain professional conduct, physically and verbally, at all times.
● Communicate and maintain positive rapport with fellow College assistants. Take turns with other CFK staff for various responsibilities (i.e. student bathroom visits, student vending machine visits).
● Exhibit positive personal habits, health, dress, speech, table etiquette and relationships with other staff and students, modeling exemplary behavior to children. Set a good example in you do in the program.
An applicant will have the following:
● Must be at least 18 years of age
● Ability to work as a team member with other CFK program employees, faculty and staff members.
● Experience working with children in a group setting.
● Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient and willing to learn.
● Ability to clear fingerprints/background check
● Ability to practice patience and focus to overcome challenges and achieve results
● Strong classroom management skills: ability to set high expectations in the classroom and keep scholars engaged
● Classroom presence: ability to be clear and precise when sharing new content with students and can effectively lead students through inquiry-based class discussions
● Current college students majoring in Early Childhood Education & other Education degrees are highly encouraged to apply.
