One immediate vacancy in the Public Guardian/Veterans' Service Office. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The expected life of the eligible list is six months. 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy Public Guardian is an experienced-level classification located in the Public Guardian division of the Public Guardian/Veterans' Service Office. Incumbents report to the department head and are assigned a caseload consisting of mentally or physically disabled or elderly conservatees appointed to the Public Guardian Office by the Superior Court. Incumbents do not supervise any subordinates, but may assist in the training of new staff. 
Duties include but are not limited to those described below. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.
Arrange for the care of conservatee and/or property; perform investigations in evaluating placement of conservatees, estates and their assets; determine and arrange for the medical, psychological, social, legal and financial needs of conservatees; consult with attorneys, physicians, social workers, other agencies, family members, relatives and others in determining conservatee needs; analyze conservatorship problems, and take appropriate action; may arrange and consent to medical and psychiatric treatments on behalf of conservatee; arrange for and ensure conservatee's food, clothing and shelter; authorize the expenditure of conservatee's funds and monitor records of all funds received and paid out on the conservatee's behalf; sell real and personal property; locate, inventory, pack, move, and store/maintain conservatee's assets; retain attorneys to represent conservatees in a variety of legal proceedings; apply to benefit programs for which conservatees may be eligible; represent conservatees at administrative hearings; testify at court hearings and jury trials; prepare reports and make recommendations for the Court, Social Security and other agencies; transport or assist in the transportation of clients.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in public administration, business administration, psychology, sociology or a related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)Experience: One year of experience providing case worker services to dependent, disabled or indigent persons or one year of experience in estate management or related investigation work.ORTwo years experience determining eligibility for and/or arranging for the provision of public services or benefits.License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.Desirable Qualification: United States Armed Forces veteran status preferred.Special Requirements: Ability to work occasional irregular hours including evenings, nights and weekends. Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds. Ability to pass background and be bondable. Ability to travel within and outside the County.
