King County is Hiring an AOT Peer Support Specialist (Social Services Specialist) Near Seattle, WA

Summary

King County's Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) provides equitable opportunities for people to be healthy, happy, and connected to community.
We are recruiting for an Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) Peer Support Specialist, Social Services Specialist. This position is in the Behavioral Health and Recovery Division (BHRD) of DCHS. This position will work within the Involuntary Treatment Act (ITA) Court system of King County, supporting people who are engaged or enrolled in King County’s AOT program. The Peer Support Specialist will develop supportive relationships with the program participants, support their recovery goals, and connect them with formal and informal support. The Peer Support Specialist functions as a role model through sharing their own lived experience with behavioral health issues in a way that will inspire hope for recovery and resiliency. The incumbent will provide trauma-informed, strengths-based services and supports. This work will often occur in locations such as jails, hospitals, court and in community.
The person selected for this role will be required to pass a Washington State Criminal History background check with ongoing checks performed by King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention. The selected candidate will also be required to complete a defensive driving course once hired.

This recruitment is to fill a Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) position that is anticipated to be 18 months in duration. If filled by a King County employee who has passed their initial probation, the TLT will be as a Special Duty Assignment (SDA)

Job Duties

To be considered minimally qualified, applicants must demonstrate a background that provides the knowledge, skill and ability to:
  • Build supportive relationships with program participants, emphasizing the development of trust, mutual respect, encouragement, and emotional support through sharing lived experience as a person in recovery from behavioral health conditions.
  • Regularly meet with program participants at court and in the community for initial engagement, relationship building, and goal setting.
  • Work collaboratively with the ITA Court and AOT treatment teams to support the program participant by amplifying the participant’s voice and choice provides advocacy, and facilitates access to information.
  • Help facilitate a "warm hand-off" to a community behavioral health provider, including sitting in on intake appointments (if requested by the participant), helping the participant to connect to support services offered by the agency such as housing, employment, etc.
  • Provide assistance in identifying and linking to community-based services and supports (primary care, mental health and or substance abuse treatment, housing, financial benefits, etc.) in collaboration with community provider.
  • Fully assist participants with transportation to court and community resources based on their individualized needs.
  • Help the participant to engage with natural supports and other community resources such as spiritual, cultural or recovery communities.
  • Provide education and resources that support self-management, self-determination, self-advocacy, and shared health care decision making.
  • Participate in Peer Specialist focused meetings, Assisted Outpatient Services Program (AOSP), Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program (AOT) team meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Assist with creating strength-based treatment plan, write progress notes, and collect data in a timely manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Credentialed by Washington State as a Certified Peer Specialist.
  • Credentialed with Washington State Department of Health as an Agency Affiliated Counselor or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience engaging with community behavioral health in a volunteer, paid or lived experience capacity. Two of those years must include working as a Certified Peer Specialist.
  • Enthusiasm for peer support and the belief that recovery is possible for everyone.
  • The incumbent in this position will have personal history with mental health and/or substance abuse recovery.
  • Understanding of, or experience navigating, ITA requirements and/or therapeutic court processes.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a cooperative and collaborative manner as a team member and develop working relationships within BHRD and DCHS as well as with providers and other stakeholders in high intensity environments.
  • Outstanding communication skills, ability to listen with compassion and to address sensitive issues in a caring, supportive manner.
  • Ability to help set mutually beneficial boundaries with program participants.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to plan/perform work independently and as part of the AOT Court team while managing multiple participants at once.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive practice and ability to challenge interpersonal and system oppression.
  • Ability to write clear and concise documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand court documents and court processes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in current Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word, Excel and SharePoint and working with electronic health records.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
Desired Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
  • Trained in Trauma Informed Peer Support and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
  • This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical. Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather.   • The work associated with this position will be performed or conducted through a combination of teleworking and onsite/in the field work and meetings. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
  • This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This position meets the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with supervisory pre-approval.
  • This position is not represented by a union.
