Kids Can Community Center is Hiring a Finance Director Near Omaha, NE

Position Summary:

Kids Can Community Center is a non-profit organization founded in 1908. Our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences.

The Finance Director plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the organization. With an annual budget of $5 million, this position oversees all financial activities, provides strategic financial guidance to the CEO and COO, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. This position reports directly to the COO and is considered part of the senior leadership team.

Essential Functions:

  • Overall financial management responsibilities include the production, review, and approval of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials for review (i.e. budget comparison, aging reports, temporarily restricted updates, profit & loss statements).
  • Prepare bi-monthly reports for the board of directors (balance sheet, profit & loss statements, accounts and investment summaries).
  • Prepare and provide monthly bank reconciliations for review for the Treasurer on the Board of Directors.
  • Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, general ledger, and cash flow management.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll, including compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and Kids Can leadership staff, assess any changes necessary.
  • Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making and strategic planning initiatives, providing insights to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage and track the performance of assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Assist Kids Can’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget and provide regular forecasts and reports to the senior leadership team.
  • Identify potential risks and opportunities and make recommendations for financial adjustments as needed to ensure financial stability.
  • Oversee financial aspects of grant requirements, including budget development, compliance, and reporting.
  • Work closely with leadership to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of grant expenditures, maximizing funding utilization.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.
  • Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grand and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period
  • Prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage major vendor contracts and agreements for the organization (i.e. payroll, cleaning services, HVAC).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, including timely filing of all tax returns and compliance with IRS regulations and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for non-profit organizations.
  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and minimize financial risk.
  • Stay updated on changes in accounting standards and regulations, making recommendations for policy updates as needed to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communication and compliance with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Leverage strengths of the current team, help to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Direct supervision of one, part-time staff.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, financial analysis, and budgeting, with experience managing budgets of similar size.
  • Experience managing grants and contracts, including compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Prior experience in governmental grants and billing preferred
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel required.
  • Ability to work independently with excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership abilities and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Excellent interpersonal and team skills, extremely collegial

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • This position is frequently required to operate a computer and file/retrieve documents. The physical demands include, but are not limited to, standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, kneeling, crouching, and bending.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
  • Be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
