POSTION SUMMARY:

School counselors help implement and manage a comprehensive school counseling program in order for all students to learn and succeed. Spending time in direct services with students and also time in indirect support services to support parents, students and staff. Under the direction of a Principal provide counseling and guidance services to students; identify and counsel students with special needs and behavioral social and school adjustment problems; make referrals to other community resources, support groups and social service agencies as appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Washington State ESA Counselor’s certificate.
  • Experience in the classroom or as a counselor is preferred.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
(may include, but not limited to the following)

  • Provide, group and classroom guidance counseling to students; confer as needed with parents, teacher and others regarding student needs including school achievement and school wide positive behavior plans.
  • Identify and counsel a variety of students with special needs including truancy, under achieving and academically deficient individuals and students with social, emotional, or behavioral problems.
  • Provide and conduct home visits as appropriate; provide crisis counseling services as needed.
  • Refer students to social service and governmental agencies, support groups and other community resources as appropriate; consult with law enforcement agencies regarding students as necessary.
  • Collaborate with appropriate site and district staff to develop and present parent and student workshops for low achieving students.
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned staff; assign and review the work of staff.
  • Prepare records and reports related to the assignment; prepare letters to parents, reports, referrals and related documents.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community resources and recent trends of counseling techniques.
  • Communicate with District personnel, school staff, parents, students and public agencies regarding student placement, referrals, services and related issues.
  • Coordinate counseling and conflict mediation groups to enhance student communication skills; provide crisis counseling as needed; consult parents concerning students with social or behavioral problems.
  • Utilize diagnostic and assessment procedures as appropriate; gather, organize and interpret data regarding students to present information to teachers and parents.
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations as requested; attend and participate in a wide variety of meetings, conferences and seminars.
  • Attend and participate in school guidance meetings such as site attendance meetings, school support team meetings, 504 meetings, Character Strong planning meetings, and IEPs.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with administration, staff, students and parents.
  • Knowledge/experience of counseling, instructional and behavioral intervention methods.
  • Knowledge/experience of community resources available to assist students and families with counseling needs.
  • Knowledge/experience of assessment, data gathering and interpreting techniques.
  • Knowledge/experience of laws, rules and regulations governing the education of children with disabilities. Experience working with at-risk student population.
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, language and learning diversity.
  • Knowledge/experience with new state learning goals and assessments.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT and Salary:

As outlined by and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) of Kettle Falls Education Association (KFEA) and Policies and Procedures of Kettle Falls School District. The salary range for teachers in the Kettle Falls School District is between $50,177 and $93,319 per school year. Placement is defined within the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and is generally based upon a combination of Education and Experience. Other forms of compensation may be available to the hired applicant in addition to their established salary range or wage scale as defined within the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Each employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than a full term shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. Each employee shall earn three (3) annual leave days per year. Employees less than 1.0 FTE will receive a prorated share of annual leave based on their percentage of FTE.

Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over the school year are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
