POSITION: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Kern Medical Surgery Center LLC - Eye Institute

Job Description:

The ophthalmic technician works closely with ophthalmologists to provide patient care and perform diagnostic tests and procedures related to eye health. Responsibilities include gathering patient information, conducting preliminary eye exams, performing specialized tests, assisting in surgical procedures, and providing patient education. They work to ensure a smooth patient flow and contribute to the efficient functioning of the ophthalmic practice.

The ideal candidate for the position should possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in ophthalmology. This includes knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy, and common eye diseases.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic instruments, diagnostic tests, and surgical equipment. Proficiency in performing visual acuity tests, tonometry, and other ophthalmic procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, healthcare professionals, and staff
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to patient care, privacy, and confidentiality
  • Knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) systems

By possessing these qualifications and experience, the candidate will be well-equipped to handle patient care needs while providing exceptional customer service to patients in a clinic or medical office setting.

Responsibilities:

  1. Gather patient medical history, including relevant information about eye conditions, previous surgeries, medications, and allergies.
  2. Conduct preliminary eye examinations, including visual acuity tests, depth perception tests, and color vision tests.
  3. Perform diagnostic tests, such as tonometry (measuring eye pressure), visual field testing, corneal topography, and retinal imaging.
  4. Administer eye drops or medications as directed by the ophthalmologist.
  5. Assist in surgical procedures, including preparing the procedure room, sterilizing instruments, and providing intraoperative support.
  6. Perform ocular measurements and calculations for intraocular lens implantation.
  7. Educate patients about their eye conditions, treatment options, and post-operative care.
  8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including test results, treatment plans, and correspondence with other healthcare providers.
  9. Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of ophthalmic equipment.
  10. Adhere to safety protocols and infection control guidelines.
  11. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as optometrists, nurses, and medical assistants, to coordinate patient care.
  12. Answering Inquiries: Respond to patient inquiries, whether in person, over the phone, or via email. Provide information about clinic services, appointment availability, insurance coverage, and general inquiries related to the practice.
  13. Medical Records Management: Maintain and update patient records in the EHR system, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality. Retrieve and file medical records as needed, following established protocols and HIPAA guidelines.
  14. Patient Satisfaction: Strive to ensure a high level of patient satisfaction by addressing patient concerns, providing excellent customer service, and maintaining a compassionate and empathetic approach.
  15. Adherence to Policies and Procedures: Follow established clinic policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain efficient operations and compliance with regulations and standards.
