Kentucky State University is Hiring an Accessibility Coordinator Near Frankfort, KY

TITLE: Accessibility Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Student Affairs

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Wellness and Experience

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD 

CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months

STANDARD HOURS: 37.5

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Responsible for working with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that the university is accessible to individuals with disabilities.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Using a combination of counseling skills, knowledge of disabilities, and an understanding of applicable laws, the coordinator will lead students and faculty through an interactive process to determine appropriate accommodations. Additionally, they will support faculty and staff with their ADA requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with disabled Kentucky State University students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate reasonable accommodations, based on Section 504, ADA, and best practices, to provide equal access.
  • Interpret comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations and medical documentation presented by students to assess students' needs and determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations in accordance with federal law.
  • Coach and support individual students with disabilities as needed to facilitate the development of self-advocacy skills, effective time management, and learning strategies.
  • Coordinate with departments on campus to facilitate access and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to ensure accessibility needs are met.
  • Counsel students regarding academics, career development, disability adjustment, and crisis intervention.
  • Maintain appropriate records of accommodations made and communication with and regarding students.
  • Monitor and address access issues in the physical and social environments at Kentucky State University.
  • Assist with outreach and transition services provided by Student Affairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to interact with students in a welcoming and professional way.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and case management skills.
  • Ability to use active listening, open-ended probing, clarifying, and other basic counseling skills.
  • Ability to interpret disability law, including but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Ability to work effectively with various stakeholders and diverse populations.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism.
  • Ability to use spreadsheets, databases, and other technology to accomplish job duties.
  • Ability to provide accurate and appropriate training to the campus community.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position does not have supervisor responsibility. 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

OTHER DUTIES: Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling/Disability Studies, Higher Education, Social work, Psychology, or related field; or a Bachelor's degree and two years of directly related experience providing accommodations in a post-secondary environment.
  • Three (3) or more years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, problem-solve, organize workflow, and respond effectively in a timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience applying the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Fair Housing Act in a post-secondary setting.
  • Previous post-secondary experience.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology.
  • Experience writing case notes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
