Kentucky Department of Corrections is Hiring a Staff Attorney II (FFTL) Near Frankfort, KY
This is a federally funded time limited (FFTL) position. As an FFTL Staff Attorney II, the primary responsibility will be to identify which cases are suitable to return to court and then representing those clients, researching cases, investigating cases and conducting hearings. It is funded by two Bureau of Justice Grants: Rule of Law and DNA Testing Post-Conviction grants. The selected candidate will work intensively with other grant supported staff to identify and litigate cases specific to the grant work. Some data collections and reporting will be required by this position.
DPA is one of the few state agencies that has an internally located innocence project whose program is integrated into the public defender program. The KIP is part of the national innocence network. The KIP team locates those inmates that have been wrongfully convicted and seeks exoneration of those defendants through the development of new evidence and litigation.
Cases often include issues such as government misconduct or development of forensic evidence which was either overlooked at trial or based on outdated and faulty science. There is no feeling that quite equals the experience of walking your client out of the courtroom after years of wrongful incarceration – if you find this kind of work exciting and interesting you should consider applying.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A strong desire to locate those individuals who are serving sentences and who have been wrongfully convicted.
- Good communication skills, both orally and in writing and a desire to develop in the area of post-conviction work.
- Previous experience in post-conviction work will be a strong asset for any candidate.
- Ability to work as a team on cases, excellent organizational skills to manage large files and record grant reporting data.
- A clear commitment to the future of the Kentucky Innocence Project as a prominent part of the services offered by the DPA.
