Description
The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) Museum Programs Team seeks an outgoing and collaborative colleague to join us in helping visitors engage with Kentucky’s history. The Museum Educator will join a creative and energetic team, where they will be given the opportunity to interact with children and deliver educational content in an exciting way.
Known for its dynamic project-based experiences, our summer camp is a star program at the Kentucky History Center and Museums. Camp is full of activities that spark a child’s interest in history and the role of Museum Programs Team is to foster that. The Museum Educator will collaborate with staff to teach camps that help children explore a variety of topics as they make history come to life.
When done successfully, the work of the Museum Educator provides a positive experience for our visitors, wanting them to come back for more.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Empower children ages 5-12 to understand how the people, places, and events in Kentucky’s past have influenced our lives today.
  • Collaborate with staff to create clear and concise lesson plans that are engaging for a wide youth audience and incorporate project-based learning, inquiry, and hands-on approaches to history education.
  • Work alongside Learning team staff to teach week-long camps from June to July for a class size up to 20 students with volunteer assistance and other staff support.
This is an Interim position. An Interim position means a position established to address a one-time or recurring need of less than nine (9) months duration and exempt from the classified service under KRS 18A.115.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies, or related field
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: One (1) year of professional experience as an educator in a classroom, museum, library, or community center. Excellent networking and presentation skills. Capacity to speak with diverse groups of people in both formal and informal settings.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Three (3) years of experience as an educator in a classroom, museum, library, or community center.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Working knowledge of principles, initiatives, and standards influencing history education. Basic computer skills in the internet, word processing, spreadsheets, and email usage. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions
Must be able to sit or stand for long periods. Must be able to travel between KHS campus sites, all within a .25-mile radius in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. This is an interim position of 37.5 hours per week, not to exceed nine consecutive months, with a Tuesday-Saturday schedule during the spring and fall months and a Monday-Friday schedule during the summer months. Must also be able to work the occasional evening or holiday to provide for the needs of KHS in its programming and services for its museum and special event guests. The primary office for this position is located in the Thomas D. Clark Kentucky History Center in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. Must be willing to occasionally travel.
