By joining our District 4, in the Nelson County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II in Nelson County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Learns to operate intermediate level equipment such as, but not limited, to asphalt distributors, asphalt hot boxes, asphalt recyclers, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro- seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers; and performs other duties as required.
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant II position will complete tasks such as:
- Operates single axle trucks to haul maintenance materials to and from job sites.
- Perform highway maintenance duties such as grading of ditches, rolling of hot mix, application of chemicals, and installation of drainage structures
- Operates basic and intermediate equipment such as front-end loaders, bush hogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jack hammers, mowing tractors, broom sweepers, and weed trimmers.
- During Winter months performs activities in support of District Snow and Ice Operations.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
- The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification.
- Learns to operate intermediate level equipment such as asphalt hot boxes, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, hydroseeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers and tandem dump trucks
- Learns how to properly set up signs and devices to control traffic through work zones
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
- Must be a High School graduate or possess a GED
- Must possess and maintain a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment
- Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Additional position information (travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.)
- Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide.
- Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with near traffic and on or around large equipment and machines involved with road construction.
- Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
