Description
The Education and Workforce Development Cabinet’s mission is to educate, prepare and train Kentucky's current and future workforces. The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation empowers individuals with disabilities to maximize employment, achieve economic self-sufficiency and independence, and to contribute back to society. We also help businesses and employers recruit, retain and accommodate employees with disabilities.
We are seeking an Adaptive Equipment Specialist I to perform specialized physical fabrication and modifications for adaptive electronic, mechanical or hydraulic equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work under supervision to design, construct, inspect, modify, and repair electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems for vehicle modifications to allow for entry/exit, loading/transporting/unloading personal mobility devices, and control operations of on-road and off-road vehicles and other assistive technology using various shop machinery tools.
  • Learn to inspect work completed by providers on the installation and repair of all high tech and electronic driving modifications.
  • Review and inspect consumer vehicles to determine need for repair/replacement of the vehicle/modifications. Documents inspections.
  • Research available assistive technology related to vehicle modifications and manufacturers/installers. Under supervision, assess and recommend assistive technology for use in consumer on and off road vehicles.
  • Train consumers in the use and maintenance of vehicle modifications related to entrance/exit and loading/transport/unloading of mobility devices.
  • Assist vehicle modification specialist and certified driver rehabilitation specialist in the setup of complex driving equipment.
  • Learn about state and federal regulations, laws, policies and guidelines for vehicle modifications and application to vocational rehabilitation staff, contractors, and consumers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of experience in the field of mechanical fabrication or in the field of electronic, mechanical, assistive technology or related field.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: One of the following certifications will substitute for the two years of the required experience: American Welding Society (AWS), Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS), Certified Welding Fabricator (CWF), Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (CATIS), and Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP). Technical training in mechanical fabrication, or in electronic, mechanical, or assistive technology or a related field will substitute for one year of experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of settings, including in tight spaces such as inside vehicles. Travel will be required to coordinate services between customers and the agency.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
