Job Description

Detention Services:

  • Supervises and monitors inmate activities and behavior to ensure a safe and controlled environment in a Direct Supervision design. Ensures inmates receive a level of persona and health care services that are consistent with that required by law.
  • Escorts/transports, monitors and supervise inmates to and from various locations; maintains order and control of inmates and visitors.
  • A Detention Center Deputy prepares inmates for court, work release, appointments, etc: escorts inmates to various locations. Also accompanies doctors, physician assistants, nurses and other professionals on treatment/medication rounds.
  • Perform duties in booking area, including performing strip searches.
  • Implement suicide prevention techniques by making frequent checks of inmate and notifying proper personnel if necessary.

Intake/Processing:

  • Receive arrestee into custody, following appropriate procedure and relaying information to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains accounting of inmate properties; receives and releases funds and / or personal property as required or requested.
  • Enters, processes and verifies information required of the various inmate management and information systems.
  • Processes the release of inmates through the intake area, completing required paperwork.
  • Ensure inmates are prepared for court and dressed appropriately.
  • Takes fingerprints and photographs of arrestee/inmate.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Physical demands include standing, lifting, carrying, walking, bending and effectively dealing with inmate altercations.
  • Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20-50 pounds of force) and including occasional very heavy work (i.e. exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force).

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Completion of diploma or GED.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Subject to shift work, extended duty hours, twenty-four call-back, holiday and weekend duty.
  • Subject to an extensive background check.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing and polygraph examination during employment.
  • May be required to possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to operate County Government equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner
  • All positions require drug testing before employment and will require a pre-employment physical
  • Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, all employees must remain drug and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.
  • Based on Federal Regulation 19-10 all positions in this classification are eligible for and will be offered hepatitis vaccinations. In addition, employees will be required to sign a statement stating they have accepted or declined the hepatitis vaccination.
