GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

The purpose of this classification is toperform unskilled, manual work functions associated with construction,maintenance, landscaping, and grounds keeping of City streets/roads, rights ofway and other public areas.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for thisposition. The omission of specific statements of the duties does notexclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or alogical assignment for this classification. Other duties may berequired and assigned.

  • Performs manual work functionsassociated with road construction, maintenance and repair projects, which mayinclude repairing roads/asphalt, patching holes, compacting road surfaces,maintaining drainage systems, installing/repairing pipe, installing/repairingwater and sewer lines, constructing/repairing ditches, clearing drainageobstructions, clearing ditches/gutters, breaking up pipes and concrete, mixingcement, constructing sidewalks and driveways, cutting pipes, installing fences,spreading asphalt/road materials, digging holes or trenches, fixing/replacingstreet signs, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, and flaggingtraffic.
  • Performs manual work functionsassociated with routine maintenance and upkeep of rights of way, parks,grounds, playing fields and other public areas: mows lawns; trimsand edges grass; blows leaves from walkways; plants, prunes, and maintainsplants, trees and shrubs; spreads mulch; rakes leaves; clears debris; maintainsfencing, grounds, bleachers, and park equipment; prepares fields for athleticevents; and performs related tasks. 
  • Removes litter, debris, and deceasedanimals from streets/roads, drainage systems, parks, playing fields and Cityproperty; travels and established route; monitors cleanliness; picks up litterand debris.
  • Transports, loads and unloads variousmaterials and equipment used in projects.
  • Performs general maintenance tasksnecessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, whichmay include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids,greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and workareas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reportsfaulty equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls duringinclement weather or other emergency situations.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairtasks, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, laws, policies, andstandards of quality and safety; utilizes precautionary safety equipment andmonitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees,other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinatework activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolveproblems; communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides informationand assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriatepersonnel; returns call as necessary.
  • Receives, prepares or completes variousforms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports,spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and otherdocuments; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a variety of power equipment,machinery and hand tools used in department projects and activities, which mayinclude pick-up truck, mower, tiller, weed eater, edger, blower, asphaltpacker, cement mixer, jack hammer, chain saw, saw, axe, shovel, rake, sprayingequipment, fertilizer spreader, tractors, infield machines, trenching machine, vibratoryroller, auger, bunker rake, and other related tools and equipment.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate,tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes performing subsequent actionsin relation to these computational operations.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information forthe purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, proceduresand standards.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate,maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/ormaterials used in performing essential functions. 
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide varietyof reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition,subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting,recording of counts, and basic measuring.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed butroutine written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according toclearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independentjudgment.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment insituations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered bywell established procedures or sequences.
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS

Highschool diploma or GED; supplemented by some previous work experience in streetand/or facility maintenance, grounds keeping or related field; or anyequivalent combination of education, training, and experience which providesthe requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Mustpossess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possessand maintain the following certifications: Flagging and CPR. May be required toobtain and maintain other certifications and licenses depending on area ofassignment.

PhysicalRequirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times,sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typicallyinvolving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling,crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing,and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

SensoryRequirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceiveand discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues orsignals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
EnvironmentalFactors: Performance of essentialfunctions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such asdirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature andnoise extremes, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confinedspaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dimlights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, orrude/irate customers.
