EQUESTRIAN CONSULTANT

Position Description

ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION: Our mission is to bring out the limitless potential in young leaders through extraordinary experiences and nurturing relationships.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Equestrian Consultant does not need to live on site, but will be on site a minimum of two days a week to help care for the horses and provide guidance to instructors on programming. The Consultant will also be on call to address urgent and emergency situations with the horses as needed. 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • Ensure Equestrian Instructors and Equine Assistant have the skills and training necessary to keep participants, employees, and horses safe and healthy while participating in equestrian programming.
  • Oversee instructors as they maintain a herd of 4-6 horses, including maintaining feed, water, grain, supplements, wound care, and knowledge of turnout etc.
  • Recognize and report to the Assistant Director of Programs and Facility Manager any program hazards and ensure those hazards are addressed before the program continues.
  • Coordinate any necessary outside appointments for horse care, including scheduling vet visits and purchasing necessary products needed for horse care or equestrian programming. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This position is compensated at a rate of $25 per hour, pre-tax, with a time commitment of roughly 16 hours per week.
  • Our summer seasonal staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis and are classified as exempt, seasonal employees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Barn or ranch management and herd health experience.
  • Must be able to commute to the LVC resident camp property in Boscobel, WI at least 2 days a week, starting with arrival of horses in June and ending after horses leave in mid-August.
  • Must be at least 18 to apply.

REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS

  • The Equestrian Consultant reports to the Assistant Director of Camp Programs & Expeditions
  • The Equestrian Consultant advises the Equestrian Instructors and Equine Assistant

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • The camp environment is often hot, humid, or rainy. You must be able to work outside for sustained periods of time without air conditioning. 
  • Position requires standing, stooping, sitting, walking long distances in hilly terrain, and occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds with or without assistance. 
  • The Equestrian Consultant must be on call and may be called late at night or early in the morning to provide support to the instructors or horses in an urgent or emergency situation.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations with quick movements or strenuous action, to ensure the safety of horses, staff, and campers.
