Kansas City Public Library is Hiring a Temporary Summer Assistant - Kansas City Digital Media Lab Near Kansas, MO

Summary

This is one of thirteen Temporary Summer Assistants for which we are currently hiring. Should you choose to apply, you will have the opportunity to indicate which (or all) of the other positions that interest you.

The temporary summer assistant role is a 10-week, 20-hours per week temporary position. The Summer Assistant will contribute to the success of Summer Reading and Summer Learning by developing and implementing programs for children and teens at the Southeast Branch Library utilizing resources in the Kansas City Digital Media Lab (KCDML).The compensation for this position is 16.44 per hour.

This position will be from May 20 –July 26 with the following weekly schedule: Monday-Thursday, 10am-3pm for 20 hours/week. Orientation will take place from 10 am – 2 pm on the first three days of employment at the Central Library (14 W 10th St, Kansas City, MO 64105). 

Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  • Work directly with KCDML staff and participants on individual and small group projects.
  • Assist in the KCDML production suite and makerspace and Digital Arts program. This includes Setup and breakdown of production equipment for audio and video recordings; Working with 3D printing and design, RC Cars, and other maker activities; Learning and working with a wide range of software such as Logic pro and Davinci Resolve and the Adobe Suite.
  • Work alongside Southeast Youth Summer Associates to support and assist with activities for Summer Reading, Storytimes and Tween Camp programming 
  • Assist with free daily meal service.
  • Facilitate outdoor pop-up/drop-in events, which includes tent set up/ take down.
  • Encourage children, teens, and families to participate in the summer reading program. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person engagement, registering through an online platform, and redeeming prizes in the library, in the community, and online. 
  • Perform other duties specific to youth programming, including, but not limited to, assisting with outreach visits, special events, celebrations, or programs. 
  • Assist with the Library’s annual patron demographic survey by staffing a table at a branch and engaging patrons on May 29th.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with patrons. 
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  • Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese. 
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds. 
  • Must consent to being photographed and recorded for posts on KCDML media platforms.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable summer weather conditions for up to four consecutive hours.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working/volunteering with children and teens
  • Community outreach and engagement 
  • Ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with patrons. 
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  • Interest/skills in photography, video production and or maker/craft activities.
