Kanawha County School District is Hiring a Professional Accountant Near Charleston, WV

POSITION: Professional Accountant
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Coordinator of Accounting
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 261 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by KCSBOE.
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Schools Specialist Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and KCSBOE Policy Performance Evaluation of School Personnel - Administrative Procedures.
JOB SUMMARY: Perform a variety of accounting and payroll duties.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Employment verifications from outside sources
  • Calculate overage pay for teachers
  • Calculate salary adjustments for new hires, transfers, and terminations
  • Calculate overpayments and prepare necessary paperwork
  • Assist the Accounting Department with legal responses
  • Perform research work on requests for information by the West Virginia Consolidate Public Retirement Board and other companies and organizations
  • Assist payroll accountants with various situations
  • Payroll processing including generating semi-monthly and make-up check runs
  • Maintain charts for employees with incomplete contracts
  • Assist with payroll deductions and remittances
  • Adhere to all payroll deadlines and ensure timely payroll submission every cycle
  • Communicate with KCS personnel in person, on the phone, and through email
  • Perform general accounting tasks as needed by the Accounting Department and/or Treasurer
  • Perform additional duties in the Accounting Department as assigned by the Coordinator of Accounting or the Director of Accounting
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (or similar), preferably with a concentration in Accounting/Finance.
  • Three or more years work experience in accounting in either business or government.
  • Must possess a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework in accounting with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA as required by WVDE for the professional accountant certification.
  • Ability to utilize Excel software for accounting and finance applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including telephone etiquette.
  • Familiarity with the West Virginia Education Information System (WVEIS) a plus.
  • Good understanding of the basic concepts of generally accepted accounting principles in connection with a double-entry accounting system.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a copier, computer, fax machine and a calculator

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
