Kanawha County School District is Hiring an Itinerant School Security Officer - 12 Positions Near Charleston, WV

POSITION: School Security Officer
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of Safety and Security
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum of 200 days annually pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by KCSBOE.
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and KCS G48A.
JOB SUMMARY: To provide plainclothes protective services for all students, staff, and visitors at all Kanawha County Schools facilities. School security employees will work cooperatively with administrators and staff to enhance emergency planning, respond to emergencies, conduct physical security assessments, assist in criminal investigations, maintain security system hardware/software, and monitor a variety of security concerns as needed in accordance with federal, state, and local law. Security employees will assist the Safety and Security Office with state mandated school safety requirements to ensure all facilities are up to date.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Job Duties.
  • Provide direct support to the school administrator(s)/supervisor while on site.
  • Participates in providing security for all occupants of school buildings and grounds.
  • Prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds.
  • Provides security services for various meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Carry a Firearm in a concealed manner on duty and maintain strict control over that weapon at all times.
  • Assists school administrators with threat assessment activities as needed.
  • Maintain constant mental alertness and mobility, with the ability to quickly evaluate and respond to critical situations as required.
  • Informs administrators of student behavior problems observed.
  • Conducts investigations when requested.
  • Represents the school district in court-related matters.
  • Prepares reports and assists in special assignments as directed.
  • Oversees and participates in security inspections of school facilities.
  • Immediately address security equipment malfunctions and reports building shortcomings through the maintenance work order system.
  • Monitor security risks and prevent escalation of violence.
  • Report all incidents requiring police, fire, or EMS services to Metro 911 and the Safety and Security Office.
  • Conduct security/vulnerability assessments when directed to do so.
  • Coordinate and share criminal intelligence with the Safety and Security Office and law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Provide closed-circuit surveillance and security systems monitoring when necessary.
  • Use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email, and database software in performing work assignments.
  • May assist in handling emergency disciplinary matters.
  • Follow federal, state, and local laws, as well as School Board policies.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Participate in training programs and firearms qualifications to maintain law enforcement certification in the State of West Virginia.
  • May, under specifically defined and limited circumstances, use force to protect innocent persons on school property.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School graduate or satisfactory completion of an approved General Education Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Applicant must be able to pass a background investigation and cannot be prohibited from possessing a firearm.
  • Honorably Retired West Virginia law enforcement officer with 20 years of law enforcement experience. Applicant must not have been under investigation for any wrongdoing at the time of retirement.
  • Applicant must have a valid West Virginia Driver’s License and their own automobile for transportation.
  • Applicant must have proof of their last firearms qualification with their department.
  • Applicant must provide proof of a minimum of 16 hours of law enforcement active shooter response training.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor setting for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60dB). Exceptions exclude gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90dB).
