POSITION: CHANCE Program and Behavior Specialist Administrator

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Assistant Superintendent of Elementary

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 240 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45;

SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and KCS G48A.

JOB SUMMARY: This position will serve as the Administrator for all CHANCE program locations and will be considered a Principal of that program. In administering that program, this position shall focus on behavioral modification that will assist the students in the CHANCE program to return to their home schools with the tools to be successful. Pursuant to that mission, this position will also collaborate and support the county’s other behavior alternative programs with behavior support and intervention through data collection, training, and policy support and implementation. This position will also serve on the County Student Assistance Team in order to help direct the county’s mission and mandate to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students.

SUPERVISES: All CHANCE Staff and collaborate with outside agencies located at CHANCE.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (In accordance with WV Code §18A-2-9)

CHANCE
  • Serves as the Principal for the county’s CHANCE Program and ensures that the program is being run in accordance with its mission;
  • Ensure that appropriate services are being implemented and used in the CHANCE program that focuses on behavior adjustment;
  • Monitor and ensure Functional Behavior Assessments along with corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans are completed as needed;
  • Develop data collection methods that can be implemented in the classroom in order to monitor behavior interventions and make appropriate recommendations as needed;
  • Train staff on data collection methods and how to monitor student progress;
  • Attend IEP meetings for students and assist the team with development of behavior goals as needed;
  • Ongoing monitoring of goal progress for each client including collecting, graphing, and analyzing data;
  • Provide ongoing feedback and supervision to teacher, paraprofessional and staff;
  • Facilitates CHANCE home visits, parental meetings, and transition meetings with appropriate staff;
Behavioral Specialist Responsibilities County-wide
  • Collaborates with program student’s home school in order to understand problem behaviors and appropriate interventions, including assisting the in the development of plans for behavioral alternative education students returning to their homeschools;
  • Serving on the County Student Assistance Team and ensuring that all students referred are referred to alternative placement in accordance with county policy and with appropriate support for that student;
  • Maintains procedures for following confidentiality and ethical codes related to dealing with mental health and educational records; Consults with referring administrators (both for CHANCE and CSAT) regarding the behavioral and educational needs of individual students;
  • Assists administrators in developing strategies for classroom management and student discipline;
  • Schedule appropriate staff development and training for CHANCE employees, schools, and other behavioral programs within the county on behavioral intervention and transition planning;
  • Monitor and ensure Functional Behavior Assessments along with corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans are completed as needed;

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Administrative certificate, required.
  • At least three years’ administrative experience, required.
  • Previous experience working with alternative education and/or implementing behavioral intervention and positive behavior support programs, required.
  • Special Education certification, preferred.
  • Demonstrates high proficiency in writing and speaking skills.
  • Crisis training response training, preferred.
  • Trauma informed training, preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of contemporary educational, emotional, and social issues concerning students and families.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of community and agency resources.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with school administrators and outside agencies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
