About the Position:
We are looking for an organized and energetic professional to support the Principal Deputy Director for the Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) at the Department of Energy (DOE). Successful candidates will have a proven ability to juggle multiple priorities, to work with minimal supervision as part of a collaborative team, to build relationships across large organizations, and to organize and manage work important to the Principal Deputy Director. Your work will include a combination of project management, preparation of written and visual materials for presentations, and may include technical writing, editing, and research. Prior experience at the Department of Energy will give you a head start to be productive in this fast-paced, growing office.
Please note that this is a hybrid position that requires three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) onsite at DOE’s headquarters, the Forrestal Building, on Independence Avenue in downtown Washington, DC. The building is easily accessible by Metro and is close to the Smithsonian and L’Enfant Plaza metro stations.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate special projects and work independently with senior leadership to ensure follow-up and progress on actions and initiatives directed by the Principal Deputy Director.
  • Perform literature reviews and research, compile information, and prepare reports, talking points, and presentations for a variety of relevant issues including energy technologies and innovations, commercialization processes and programs, and National Lab related topics.
  • Coordinate closely with the OTT Communications Team and the DOE Public Affairs and National Lab communications teams as needed. May include providing guidance to communications staff on topics of particular interest and on appropriate communication style for the Principal Deputy Director.
  • Coordinate with the Principal Deputy Director’s Scheduler and the Director’s Executive Assistant on prioritizing and scheduling meetings and events. As priorities change, continually maintain awareness of outstanding tasks and activities to determine if schedules need to be adjusted and to communicate changes to appropriate parties.
  • Keep abreast of the Principal Deputy Director’s immediate and long-term commitments and plans. Identify conflicts and flag problems for intervention; correct course as appropriate.
  • Control, organize, and maintain files and records to comply with information technology requirements for storage and information sharing, and to ensure that information is easily located and retrieved when needed.
  • Coordinate with the OTT Chief of Staff on key deliverables and priorities for the Front Office, including supporting key action items, avoiding duplication of effort, and executing on deliverables on behalf of the Principal Deputy Director.
  • Build and maintain an awareness of the organizational hierarchy within DOE and with outside parties to appropriately adjust priorities when new requests are received. Apply project management and communications skills to ensure expectations are correctly set and consistently met.
Position Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in relevant field from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience working with a variety of Stakeholder Groups including other government agencies, DOE National Laboratories, Senior Executives, C-suite leadership, and other senior staff at both non-profit and for-profit organizations.
  • Detail oriented with strong organization, time management, verbal / written communication, and analytical skills.
  • Proven experience in positions that require good judgement of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Project management skills and ability to manage information flow in a timely manner.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, gather information from others, make inquiries and synthesize information.
  • Ability to convey information and explain or discuss issues related to the Principal Deputy Director’s priorities and activities.
  • Ability to interact with persons of all backgrounds, cultures, and affiliations in all levels of government and outside entities.
  • Proven ability to coordinate several tasks at one time and perform well under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently to relieve management of certain key support functions.
  • Experience with strategic planning, project management, and goal setting.
  • Demonstrated interest and expertise in energy, commercialization, and/or the National Lab enterprise.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize volumes of data and to clearly communicate technical and/or financial ideas and concepts to a wide range of audiences.

  • Ability to fulfill duties with minimal training from federal personnel; must not represent or exhibit a conflict of interest with OTT stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to interpret and implement appropriate rules, regulations, processes, and procedures of the DOE.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
  • Experience working in a DOE environment.
  • Experience with and/or understanding of technology transfer, commercialization, and the energy sector in general.
  • Experience as a Project Manager.
  • Ability to multi-task and respond to rapidly changing priorities and workload.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Experience working with Senior Level Executives.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of applications; advanced skills with PowerPoint and Excel.
Reporting Center Requirement:
The duties of this position require the Candidate to report to the DOE Forrestal Building in Washington DC or a designated DOE Reporting Center during their daily work schedule. The reporting location will be defined at the time the position is filled. Unless otherwise stated, the default DOE Reporting Center is the DOE Forrestal Building in Washington DC. Occasional or regularly scheduled telework may be available for this position as workload or other conditions allow and will be negotiated at the time of appointment. These teleworking agreements, if accepted by both parties, are intended to be flexible and may change during the term of this appointment. Initial teleworking agreements are not guaranteed to remain unchanged and workload or other conditions may require the candidate to report full time to the designated DOE Reporting Center.
Working Environment & Conditions:
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, do simple math calculations and withstand moderate amounts of stress. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
