Description
The Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB) is a comprehensive human services organization in Middlesex County, New Jersey. We provide a comprehensive range of essential services for children, youth, families, and senior citizens. We deliver need-based assistance to low and moderate-income residents of Central New Jersey and serve as advocates for those seeking to live productive, self-sufficient lives.
The Parent Educator is a seasoned, creative, energetic, and flexible individual who supports the Parents as Teachers team. S/he provides services using the PAT model and training. The goal of the Parent Educator is to support each childs parent as the primary and most significant teacher. The Parent Educator will work with participating mothers, fathers and caregivers to enhance child health, growth and development, and school readiness.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Parents as Teachers
  • Complete Parents as Teachers (PAT) Foundational and Model Implementation Training to acquire PAT certification.
  • Complete the required competency based professional development and renew PAT certification annually.
  • Maintain a caseload of 20-24 families.
  • Conduct no more than 48 home visits per month in the first year and 60 visits per month in the second year and beyond.
  • Provide 1 to 4 visits per month to each family as determined by high needs characteristics and state requirements.
  • Involve parent participants in all aspects of the program including home visits, group meetings/group connections, and screening.
  • Use PAT foundational visit guides and curriculum to design and deliver personal visits to families.
  • Complete family centered assessments and goals with families within PAT specified time frames.
  • Model appropriate communication skills and discipline techniques.
  • Provide health and development screening as required by PAT model.
  • Monitor and educate parents on age appropriate child development and screening results.
  • Identify and link parents to resources as needed.
  • Co-facilitate monthly group connections with colleagues and supervisor.
  • Actively recruit new families and children for the program.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed client records.
  • Gather family feedback for the purpose of program improvement.
  • Participate in regular individual and group supervision.
  • Engage in ongoing staff development to improve personal and professional skills.
  • Support the professional growth and development of colleagues by sharing materials and information.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops and in-service training provided by PRAB, State of NJ and Prevent Child Abuse NJ.
  • Assist with other projects as needed.
General
  • Participate actively and represent PRAB in community life within Central New Jersey, including community events, neighborhood and community groups, advocacy efforts, policy-oriented forums, PRAB partnerships and collaborations, government agencies, and private institutions
  • Conduct, attend, and participate in internal meetings to maintain and improve professional competence

Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • Regularly stand, sit, and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts
  • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and extreme heat
  • Occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration
Compensation and Hours
  • This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position
  • Salary is based on an pre-established range and is commensurate with experience
  • Includes some early evening and weekend work hours
  • Benefits are generous, including paid employee health and dental insurance (some employee contribution required); voluntary vision and retirement plans are also available
  • Paid time off includes vacation, sick, and personal days, and holidays
Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in education, early childhood, social work or related field preferred.
  • At least two years experience working with young children and/or parents.
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Valid NJ Drivers License, satisfactory driving record and reliable vehicle
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly recommended
  • Ability to travel out of state if necessary for foundation training
