About June Shelton School
June Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the world’s largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the community—a speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

Purpose:
Serve as teacher and guide of students in 1st/2nd grade with learning differences across all subject areas using Montessori Applied to Children at Risk (MACAR) strategies and Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE).
Qualifications & Skills:
  • 3 years of elementary education teaching experience desired
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Child/Human Development, or Special Education required. Master’s Degree, Montessori training, and/or Language Therapy training are preferred.
    • If the degree is in a related area, the teacher must have a minimum of twelve credit hours in Education.
  • Desire and positive enthusiasm to work with Lower School students
  • Experience working with students with learning differences
  • Proficiency in educational technology
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues
Essential Functions:
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the Shelton Lower School curriculum.
  • Plan lessons and materials to implement curriculum as outlined in the Shelton Lower School curriculum guide and support new curricular programs.
  • Manage and implement effectively Lower School purchased technology for educational and administrative needs.
  • Adapt and modify lessons to meet each child’s needs and abilities.
  • Understand/have knowledge of students’ learning differences, their needs, and accommodations.
  • Facilitate learning using Montessori Applied to Children at Risk (MACAR) and designated Language Therapy lessons.
  • Communicate with students in a professional, calm, and supportive manner and serve as a student advocate.
  • Work as an effective team member with other faculty, new teachers, and non-teaching staff. Create a positive, collaborative, respectful working environment with your co-teacher.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with parents and colleagues in a supportive and positive manner.
  • Write professional, articulate, factual progress notes, report cards, email communication, as well as celebration comments in a timely manner.
  • Provide supervision in various duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, carpool, recess, lunch, and other duties as requested.
  • Accompany students to various places in and out of the building, to include, but not limited to, lunch, library, special classes, gymnasium, playground and other outdoor areas.
  • Maintain a clean and organized space that is aesthetically appealing and is student-centered.
  • Attend curriculum and staff meetings and complete the required professional development hours annually by attending staff development, in-service programs, and other training that will impact student learning and/or lead to an advanced degree.
  • Attend parent conferences three times a year and other times at the request of the parent or school administration.
  • Arrive promptly according to the hours defined in the employee agreement.
  • Create and have readily available plans for a substitute.
  • Physically manage class in emergency situations, including fire, weather, and lockdown drills. Ensure safe transitions to designated areas for all school related safety drills.
  • Chaperone students on field trips.
  • Support the mission of the Shelton School by promoting the school in a positive manner and facilitating a sense of Shelton community.
  • Fulfill other professional responsibilities as assigned.
