JSI’s headquarters and manufacturing plant is located 20 miles Southwest of Atlanta and operates six regional maintenance facilities across the United States.
Winder Specialist
Functional Role: Winder specialists use expertise and leadership gained through years of experience to deliver improvement within the manufacturing system and machine design. The duties vary widely between practicing safety leadership, troubleshooting, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, equipment and process studies, audits and on-site maintenance. A key component of a winder specialist's job is to utilize knowledge and skills to improve customer's onsite production capability and equipment reliability.

This position is a critical interface to the JSI customers. Working hand in hand with the account managers, he or she will support existing customers in their usage of JSI Winding technology. The paper mills supported will predominantly be in the USA but with a possibility of very occasional needs arising in other papermaking parts of the world.
JSI is looking for a strong individual; however, there is the need to balance confidence with effective collaboration to maintain the JSI culture and effectiveness.
Reports to: Director of Sales
Minimum Requirements:
5-7 years’ experience in operations and service within the area of expertise
The applicant will be capable of supporting extensive domestic and some international travel requirements and providing process technical support on a business priority basis.
70-75% Travel
Winder/Rewinder Expertise:
Mastery of winder theory and ability to train others.
Good understanding of winder safety requirements and ability to support our corporate winder safety audit program.
Ability to support winders and rewinders of various manufacturers and vintages.
Ability to recommend capital and non-capital solutions to meet business objectives.
Ability to review capital investment proposals for soundness and accuracy.
Ability to evaluate customer needs and find solutions to fit most effectively.
Good mechanical and electrical winder troubleshooting skills.
Good understanding of various paper properties and how these can affect winder run ability through usage of different winder recipes.
Good understanding of TNT calculations.
Good knowledge of winder logic with ability to make changes and improvements when necessary.
Key Accountabilities:
The winder specialist position is accountable for delivering results on a wide range of assignments, short and long-term, across our global customer base. The winder specialist must work well with varied teams and be able to quickly engage customers from all levels of the organization from executive to the shop floor, demonstrate team leading skills and ensure co-operation with other vendors and contractors on-site. Technical skills have generally been developed through manufacturing and commissioning exposure to winders.

Scope:
The winder specialist position functions as both an internal- and external consultant and is expected to develop projects and produce improvement in the area of expertise anywhere in the company and customer base. The duties range widely between safety leadership, troubleshooting, optimization, teaching, deliberate improvement projects, capital projects, process audits, strategic studies, mentoring and team leading. Performance measurements include:
Ability to contribute to, and deliver improving safety results, with a specific emphasis in the area of expertise – Winders within Papermills
Ability to diagnose and resolve operating malfunctions in customer machinery, either onsite and or remotely rapidly and accurately
Reduction in consumption of direct raw materials, energy, and labor.
Improvement in production, reliability, availability and quality above historical limits and to world-class levels in co-operation with our customers
Ability to interface with and technically develop and mentor others within the area of expertise
Ability to drive results and self-manage priorities on multiple simultaneous projects
Key Competencies:
The Winder Specialist is a self-directed individual, and as such needs a wide array of leadership, functional / technical and organizational skills.
Leadership/managerial competencies:
Interpersonal Savvy - This position interacts with all levels of the company and customers, across the cultures and languages within paper industry operations. The individual must adapt as the situation requires and maintain positive outcomes.
Learning on the Fly & Problem Solving - This person is the expert within their area of specialization. As new or unique situations are encountered, they must self-develop technical skills as the situation dictates.
Presentation & Communication Skills - This person must employ strong verbal and written skills in the rapid communication of issue resolution and new opportunity development.
Must be able to oversee projects and manage all aspects of leading the JSI
Service and Sub-contracting Crew.
Functional / Technical competencies:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology and/or five or more years of related hands-on mechanical experience such as that acquired by maintenance mechanic or technician, within the Paper Industry working on winders.
Experienced in fundamentals of engineering needed for process or equipment design and knowledgeable of the capital process.
Process - Expert in the individual's specific area of expertise or combination of areas of expertise.

Engineering - Experienced in the structure and operating principles of different types and makes of winders, both domestic and overseas.
Engineering - CAD / 3D experience
Operations - Familiar in the development of operating procedures and policy.
Operations - Winder specific alignment experience
