JSerra Catholic High School is Hiring an ental Music Director Near San Juan Capistrano, CA

Reports To: Vice Principal Of Academics/Department Chair Job Status: 10-month, full-time, exempt
Compensation Information: Salary range $56,320 - $85,000, commensurate with experience. This position is
eligible for benefits (medical, dental, vision), generous PTO and holiday schedule, 401(k) savings plan with school
match, higher education tuition reimbursement, and 50% tuition remission for employee’s children attending
JSerra.
Description: JSerra is seeking a dynamic instrumental music educator to direct its band/orchestra program.
Additional teaching areas may be considered as applicable. The ideal candidate for this position would be an
experienced instrumentalist (on one or more woodwind, brass, percussion, or string instrument) and
conductor who enjoys working with high-school-aged students and their families. Applicants should have
strong musicianship, confident leadership skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and
administrators in a team decision-making environment, excellent oral and written communicative skills, and
proficiency in technology.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement an engaging and comprehensive instrumental music curriculum to include
instrumental techniques, ensemble performance, student leadership, music theory, and music
history/culture, all within the context of a formative Catholic education
  • Develop and implement an effective strategy for recruitment and retention of students, including
directing the JSerra Arts Academy after-school middle school Band/Orchestra program
  • Organize and direct 3-4 annual concerts, collaborate with other Performing and Visual Arts programs
to produce relevant collaborative projects, work with the Choir Director to provide music for several
all-school masses per year, perform at other school events as needed, and seek out appropriate
opportunities to participate in festivals and other community events
  • Conduct rehearsals during class time and outside of the regular school day as necessary, including
dress rehearsals before each concert
  • Manage the acquisition, distribution, collection, storage, and upkeep of necessary teaching materials,
including sheet music, musical instruments, etc.
  • Provide supervision and oversight for the Assistant Orchestra Director, Instrumental Coaches, any
other contracted program staff, and all parent/community volunteers
  • Coordinate and lead domestic and international tours as appropriate for the program
  • Oversee Band/Orchestra track students enrolled in the Arts Magnet Program, including auditions,

development and delivery of specialized curriculum, and participation in outside field trips and other
events (in collaboration with the Arts Magnet Program Director)

  • Provide mentorship for student leaders and foster a sense of community and belonging amongst all
Band/Orchestra students
  • Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom as necessary, such as before/after school, at
break, and at lunchtime
  • Communicate, consult, and cooperate with other members of the school’s staff as applicable
  • Participate in staff, group, or other meetings related to the school as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in leading a productive rehearsal and conducting a large instrumental ensemble
  • Advanced knowledge of musical notation and instrumental skills on at least one instrument; general
knowledge of instrumental techniques on other woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments
  • Familiarity with sacred music, especially in regard to Catholic liturgy and Church tradition
  • Experience in concert programing, curriculum design, budget management, student assessment, and
program promotion/recruiting
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills – both in writing and as a speaker

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
• Master’s degree preferred
• Previous high school teaching experience desired

equipment; occasional pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching may also be required. Good hearing is required
when communicating on the telephone or in person.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment described herein is representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential function of this job. Primarily office environment with controlled
temperature conditions and exposure to environmental factors and hazardous physical substances are minimal
and pose little to no risk of injury. Occasional driving to meetings and/or events may be required.

will” in accord with general employment practices in California. Under this employment relationship, Employee
is free to end his/her employment with the School for any reason at any time, with or without notice. Likewise,
the School may end Employee’s employment at any time, with or without cause or notice, pursuant to this “at-
will” provision. No manager, supervisor, or employee of the School shall have any authority to enter into an
employment agreement, express or implied, with Employee providing for employment other than at-will. With
the exception of this employment “at-will” provision and the Arbitration Agreement, any of the terms and
conditions of employment with the School may be modified at the sole discretion of the School with or without
cause or notice at any time.
