Summary Statement
Are you looking for small class sizes and the ability to truly make a difference in a student’s educational journey? Our teachers provide instructional planning, monitoring, and support of educational needs of our students by organizing and delivering instruction using the approved curriculum. The role of the substitute teacher exists to provide instruction to youth in the Education Unit when a classroom teacher position is vacant or a classroom teacher is out of the building. This postion willl be shared between three buildings, including Ferris School for Boys, the Cleveland White School, and the New Castle County Detention Center---all at 1825 Faulkland Rd, Wilmington, DE 19805. Work hours vary depending upon the building in which you are working for the day and range from 7am-3pm to 8:30pm-4:30pm.

Unique characteristics of teaching in this setting include:
  • Small classes of between 2 and 12 students, on average
  • Youth Rehabilitative Specialist (YRS) staff in the room with you to assist with behavioral expectations and consequences, as needed
  • Occasional mixed grade/age levels in classes, depending upon current enrollment and student needs
  • All-year-round teaching (including summer) with holiday breaks
Essential Functions
To perform this job successfully, the candidate must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in a satisfactory manner. Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position. 
  1. In the case of teacher vacancy, designs an instructional program based on core curriculum/state standards and adapted to meet individual needs.
  2. Implements a successful classroom management system within the guidelines of the facility’s behavior management program.
  3. Assesses students in assigned certification/content area(s).
  4. Collaborates/communicates with members of the Education Unit and other service providers.
  5. Prepares reports and documentation of assessment and progress towards goals.
  6. Complies with Federal, State and Local Regulations, Policies and Procedures.
  7. Remains current in instructional strategies and technology.

  1. High school diploma or GED required, Bachelor's degree preferred (pay is based upon education level as specified in in Title 14, Chapter 13, § 1326)
  2. Must be available to work during the summer, as our schools operate year-round
  3. Experience working with children/adolescents
  4. Desire to work with alternative populations/at-risk youth
Conditions of Hire
