VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 5/9/2024

POSITION: Payroll Specialist

SALARY RANGE: Grade 70/71, Range $43,524 - $54,984 Annually

LOCATION: Simpson Building

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

REPORTS TO: Payroll Supervisor

OVERVIEW: Johnston County Schools is a rapidly growing public school district located southeast of Raleigh. We educate over 38,000 students with over 4,400 employees at 48 schools and an annual budget that exceeds $450M. We seek a highly motivated individual to join our Finance Department as a Payroll Specialist.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to pay for NC public school employees.
  • Set up new/changed employee information in the payroll system.
  • Prepare and submit the monthly retirement report for the NC Retirement System.
  • Review and correct salary exceptions as reported by the Department of Public Instruction.
  • Process payroll adjustment entries (202’s and BUD’s) as provided by the Finance Officer or Payroll Supervisor.
  • Process timesheets and Timekeeper records for payroll.
  • Review all payroll entries and records for accuracy.
  • Compute and create pay records for overtime, supplements, longevity and miscellaneous pay.
  • Manage and review payroll for schools and departments.
  • Assist with public records requests and other reports as assigned.
  • Review and process leave requests.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes.
  • Assist the Risk Management Director with providing pay and budget code information as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ACCEPTABLE KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A High School Diploma is required. A two-year or four-year business degree, certificate, or equivalent, is a plus but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail required.
  • Basic knowledge of wage and hour laws, FLSA, etc. is helpful.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate well with school personnel and central office staff.
  • Ability to coordinate, plan, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and other stakeholders.

  • Pay range of $43,524 - $54,984 annually depending upon relevant experience and education
