Johnston Community School District is Hiring a Head Custodian Near Johnston, IA

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Meet physical requirements:
    • Ability to lift heavy loads not to exceed 50 lbs.
    • Ability to climb and work from ladder, scaffolding, or personnel lift
    • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Training and experience in mechanics, heating, plumbing, carpentry, electricity and painting desired
  • Ability to read basic operating instructions and write reports
  • Reasonable degree of computer proficiency
  • Work experience in educational setting preferred
  • Fireman or engineer license preferred
  • Valid Iowa driver’s and/or chauffeur’s license required
  • Possess effective collaborative and interpersonal skills

Successful completion of a criminal background check and physical capacity profile test will be required upon offer.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Professional Performance Criteria

  • Supervises and participates in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school building. This includes:
  • Maintaining necessary inventories
  • Requisition and receive supplies and equipment, as needed
  • Cleaning and maintaining all boilers and other major equipment
  • Supervising and participating in necessary painting and general repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry and general mechanical areas
  • Assisting in remodeling and renovation work
  • Reporting major repairs or damage to school property promptly to the Principal or Director of Buildings and Grounds as conditions requires
  • Performing emergency repair or cleaning services as necessary
  • Assuming responsibility for the general fire safety of the building
  • Checking daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
  • Cleaning corridors during the day when conditions require it
  • Supervises and/or participates in the general maintenance of the school grounds. This includes:
  • Raising and lowering of flags before 8:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. on each school day
  • Providing routine safety checks of playground and conditions
  • Assisting in snow removal
  • Helps in selecting, scheduling, and training members of the custodial staff
  • Assists with emergency situations when requested by building administrator or Director of Building and Grounds during non-school hours
  • Assists building principal in development of annual Capital Improvement Plan
  • Duties and responsibilities as requested by supervisor may vary from time to time
