Position Overview:

This position is for an Automation Engineer supporting the Army Edge Computing Capability (AECC) project that Project is fielding for the US Army in the Pacific theater. The AECC solution is a hyperconverged, multitenant private cloud hosting environment for hosting Army enterprise and tactical applications. AECC is utilizing the full suite of VMware products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundations, ARIA Automation, Tanzu) to implement a Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) across multiple global sites. Project is integrating the Hashicorp Vault and Terraform, Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, and the GitLab Ultimate Suite into the AECC solution to provide an automation platform in addition to the VMware ARIA capabilities along with a DevSecOps framework for the Army Tactical users to utilize. Project provides value added common and managed services built on top of the VMware foundation, that hosted Army applications will require. Project is a managed service provider (MSP) and hosting services provider for Army applications. Project is a Product Director office under Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS).

Position Duties:

• Work with Government engineers to develop and maintain the automation framework for supporting the AECC environments to include Hashicorp Terraform and Vault, Red Hat Ansible Tower, and GitLab Ultimate.
• Develop, deploy, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) pipelines and automated configuration management for the AECC solution.
• Work with hosted customers of AECC to provision customer enclaves utilizing the automation framework.
• Harden the automation tools per commercial best practices and the required government cybersecurity controls.
• Develop and maintain system, infrastructure, and process documentation (system diagrams, network topology, software configurations, device configurations, standard operating procedures).
• Troubleshooting and root cause analysis of any automation issues.
• Provide on-call support for triage and resolution of after-hours production incidents.
• Make recommendations for improvements to security, scalability, manageability, and performance across a wide variety of network, storage, and compute services and technologies.
• Promote automation concepts, processes, and benefits across the organization.
• Review and document "as-is" IT environments, perform a gap analysis to articulate automation options and recommendations to improve the current state.

Required Skills:

• Senior level experience with Terraform, Vault, Ansible Tower, and GitLab.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) environments, including activities around automated network configurations, server deployments, software provisioning, monitoring and testing.
• Knowledge and experience with containerization and container orchestration tools (Tanzu, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.).
• Experience with Terraform code, managing state files, and handling secrets.
• Experience writing Ansible playbooks for enterprise operations tasks.
• Experience structuring Ansible playbooks and organizing tasks into roles.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, BASH, etc.).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong troubleshooting skills across the automation framework.

Desired Skills:

• Working knowledge of DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) and the Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) process.
• Required Certifications:
• Security or equivalent DoD 8570.01-M IA Tech Level II certification.
• Must have (or obtain within 6 months of hire) a computing environment certification as defined in DoD 8570.01-M, such as an automation or DevOps industry certification.
