Summary/Summary

A responsible person to work at a 100-acre ornamental plant nursery in SE North Carolina. This will be responsible for learning and helping with all functions of the shipping department. The shipping functions are picking plants, tagging, verifying orders, and loading plants on carts for delivery. In addition to shipping responsibilities, this person will help with plant production tasks such as moving plants, weeding, fertilizing, and property management.

Minimum Qualifications

Willingness to learn. Especially to identify plants by name and the attributes of a high-quality plant.
Operate a tractor with manual transmission.
Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Hard-working. When finishing a task, looks for another task.
Observant- detail oriented
Must be willing to work extra hours if needed; weekends and after hours to ensure productivity of other nursery functions. The shipping department often works past 5 pm, especially during the months of March-May.
Must wear ankle-high work boots and adhere to other safety policies.
Successfully pass drug screening and post-offer physical assessment.
Must possess a valid driver's license.

Essential Functions

Load shipping carts with orders for customers/ Instruct employees to load shipping carts with orders for customers.
- The product should be loaded securely to minimize damage during transport.
- Products and carts should have identification tags in visible locations. Products requiring custom or brand tags should be checked to ensure they are secure at loading. Products that require custom or branded labels should be checked to make sure they are safe during loading.
- Verify correct counts, customers, and load orders through the loading process and 2nd verification.
- Maintain or exceed quality standards and alert Pick Team Leader or Outside Order Coordinator if the product is questionable and alert the Selection Team Leader or External Order Coordinator if the product is questionable.
- Maintain an organized and clean workspace.

Trailer Loading/Unloading- Trailer loading/unloading.
- Ensure all carts are loaded according to Load Manifest drop order and secured properly on the truck/trailer.
- Complete driver paperwork on a clipboard and place it with the correct trailer/truck.
- Collect and report product returns correctly.
- Inventory carts as they are sent out and returned.

Cart Maintenance
- Monitor and ensure carts are in good working order.
  - Painting Carts
  - Greasing Wheels
  - Replacing Bad Wheels.

Other duties as assigned.
- Pick plants/ Lift plants/Tag plants.
- Plant care: weeding, pruning, mowing, watering, and applying dry fertilizer.
- Essential maintenance of nursery: Sweeping, installing ground mat, installing shade clothe to shade areas, moving gravel by wheelbarrow, and shoveling gravel to fill in holes.
- Climb a ladder to a height of 10 ft.
- Winter protection: Covering and uncover plants with cold protection blanket, poly film, and shade cloth.
- Basic construction: using hammers, power saws, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers.

Physical Demands

Able to lift 89 lbs. waist high and carry 10 ft., lift 30lb/ hand and carry 60 feet, lift 50lb to a height of 5 ft.
Able to walk and stand for 4-hour durations.
Able to kneel, stoop, squat, bend, reach, and grasp.
Able to push and pull 100 lbs.
Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Nursery Worker 1

Work Environment

This position involves outdoor exposure during the workday (heat, cold, rain, snow, ice)
This role routinely uses standard equipment such as tractors. / This feature routinely uses standard equipment such as tractors.
This position must also routinely work around chemicals used to maintain the health of plants (insecticides, fungicides, PGRs, fertilizers) which requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment such as respirators, Tyvek suits, knee-high boots, and gloves.

Some travel may be required for local parts pick up therefore must allow a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
