Summary
Needed a responsible person to work at a 100-acre ornamental plant nursery in SE North Carolina. We are located conveniently near 1-40 at exit 390 by Wallace, NC. We are a short 40-minute drive from Wilmington. The right candidate will be responsible for learning and helping with all the basic functions of the nursery. The nursery functions include potting, mowing, weeding, and pruning plants in the production department. Shipping plants is another action in the nursery which includes picking plants for orders, tagging, and loading plants on carts for delivery. There are also seasonal tasks of covering and uncovering plants for winter protection.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An interest in plants.
  • Willingness to learn. Especially to identify plants by name and the attributes of a high-quality plant.
  • Operate a tractor with manual transmission.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be organized and able to multi-task effectively.
  • Hard-working. When finishing a task, look for another task.
  • Observant- detail-oriented.
  • Must be willing to work extra hours if needed; weekends and after hours to ensure productivity of other nursery functions.
  • Must wear ankle-high work boots and adhere to other safety policies.
  • Successfully pass drug screening and post-offer physical assessment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Essential Functions
  • Plant care: weeding, pruning, mowing, watering, and applying dry fertilizer.
  • Operate a manual transmission tractor.
  • Select plants for orders. Lift and carry to trailers from the field.
  • Load plants from trailers to shipping carts.
  • Winter protection: Covering and uncovering plants with a cold protection blanket, poly film, and shade cloth.
  • Basic maintenance of nursery: installing ground mat, installing shade clothes to shade areas, moving gravel by wheelbarrow, and shoveling gravel to fill in holes.
  • Climb a ladder to a height of 10 ft.
  • Basic construction: using hammers, power saws, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
  • Standing/walking - most of the day
  • Stooping, Bending, Crouching- to weed plants or picking up and putting down plants
  • Occasional kneeling or crawling to cover or uncover plants and hoop houses
  • Lifting plants 3 – 1 gal pots/ hand = 15 lb./hand
  • Lifting plants 2 – 3 gal pots/ hand with the use of a handler = 30 lb./ hand
  • Lifting 1 – 50 lb. bag fertilizer or potted plants to 7gal size.
  • Pushing or pulling trailers or carts = 100 lbs./f
  • Reaching above the shoulder occasionally to trim trees or load plants on carts
  • Gripping multiple plants at a time 2-3 plants per hand
  • Talking, Hearing, Vision, color vision (plant identification)
  • Working outside in all weather. Heat, cold, rain, wind.

Work Environment
  • This position involves outdoor exposure during the workday (heat, cold, rain, snow, ice)
  • This role routinely uses standard equipment such as tractors.
  • This position must also routinely work around chemicals used to maintain the health of plants (insecticides, fungicides, PGRs, fertilizers) which requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment such as respirators, Tyvek suits, knee-high boots, and gloves.
Travel
Some travel may be required for local parts pick up therefore must allow a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).
