Johns Hopkins University, Department of Dermatology is Hiring a Dermatology Technician Program Coordinator Near Baltimore, MD

The purpose of the position is to establish a designated person responsible for coordinating the Dermatology Technician Program. This individual will onboard/train newly hired Medical Assistants and oversee the dermatology tech float pool. We are seeking a Dermatology Technician Program Coordinator who will spend 70% of their time in this role and 30% of their time as a Certified Dermatology Technician. 2018 marked The Department of Dermatology’s inaugural dermatology technician program cohort. Since it’s initiation, the department has successfully trained most of our MAs into Certified Dermatology Technicians. Many variables have contributed to the department’s need to pause the program to restructure. The Dermatology Technician Program Coordinator will be responsible for restructuring the program to ensure our DT cohort is receiving the highest standard of training. Will ensure Certified Derm Techs are trained to provide exceptional support to our providers, clinic leadership, and our valued patients.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Dermatology Technician Program
  • Build and implement procedures for dermatology technician certification.
  • Organize and manage cohort-style program.
  • Establish and develop curriculum.
  • Develop skills/competencies training assessments.
  • Lecture and/or coordinate qualified/trained staff to lecture curriculum.
  • Educate and train the technicians and administer Derm Tech skills testing.
  • Obtain feedback regularly regarding dermatology technicians’ performance, program development, and suggestions for improvement.
  • Monitor DT trainee participation to ensure program expectations are met.
  • Performs weekly assessments on cohort members and supplies written feedback to trainees regarding their progress.
  • Develop and monitor study groups for all Dermatology Technicians to obtain dermatology technology certification skill sets.
  • Coordinate the annual competency assessment for all Derm Techs.
  • Coordinate the JHM Dermatology-specific orientation for newly hired CMAs, including the Department of Dermatology’s standards of practice and site-specific standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to required annual JH myLearnings (HCG Osom training, etc.)
  • Track initial certification and recertification for all department trained dermatology technicians.
  • Meet with Derm Tech trainee’s Manager/Supervisor regularly regarding eligibility for promotion and progress through cohort, reporting concerns/issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate with HR representative regarding status of all technicians’ certifications.
  • Provide a Derm Tech orientation to all new staff who go through the ACDT certification.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures pertaining to the practice of Dermatology CMAs, Assistant Dermatology Technicians and Certified Dermatology Technicians, in collaboration with the Dermatology Nurse Manager and Medical Directors.
  • Collect, copy, and monitor Scribe Attestations for all involved Derm Techs.
  • Collaborate with other members of the dermatology staff and Dermatology administration regarding general Derm tech issues and opportunities for remediation.
Float Pool Management:
  • Coordinate the daily distribution of float pool Derm Techs with the needs of each clinical service at all dermatology clinic locations.
  • Manage the apprentice program that maintains a pool of potential dermatology techs for the Department of Dermatology.
  • Responsible for ongoing assessment and development of training program to ensure the program continues to meet organizational needs and adheres to regulatory requirements.
  • Daily clinical assignment and reassignment of floating techs.
  • Determine the degree of urgency of re-staffing requests from various clinics.
Dermatology Tech Duties: 
  • Clinical technician services: work in clinics, all services, and satellite locations.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Log all float pool allocations and report to finance team to conduct internal transfers.
  • Coordinate ordering and distribution of dermatology tech uniforms, system wide.
  • Budget review and analysis as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Current Certified/Registered Medical Assistant and current Dermatology Technician Certification. Must maintain these certifications for the duration of employment in this role.
  • Five years of progressively responsible administrative experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required administrative experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Must be a Certified Dermatology Technician.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in education.
  • Four to five years in the dermatology field.
