Duties and Responsibilities

This position is part of the SRACES contract with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama and is for on site work at Marshall and at the National Space Science and Technology Center on the UAH campus and supports the Transform to Open Science office.

TOPS is a training initiative by NASA to transform agencies, organizations, and communities to an inclusive culture of open science. The programmatic communications strategist sits within TOPS and coordinates the overall communications, outreach and engagement needs of the program. The communications strategist is responsible for creating yearly communications and outreach plans to be included with the overall Office of the Chief Science Data Officer yearly communications plan.

Responsibilities include:

• Write and execute an annual overarching strategic communications plan as well as communications plans for major project milestones and events.
• Write blog posts, press releases, newsletter articles, etc. in both AP writing style and according to the NASA style guide.
• Represent TOPS at conferences at exhibit booths, should be comfortable with interacting with the public and speaking about TOPS and open science – significant travel required ( >25% at times).
• •Give high-level presentations on open science to diverse audiences.
• Monitor and report on metrics from communications efforts.
• Work in collaboration with the OCSDO Comm team and the TOPS project office as well as the MSFC and Agency Office of Communications.
• Coordinate and integrate communication approaches and products across multiple communication disciplines and platforms.
• Develop and integrate key messages across a full spectrum of communication products.
• Contribute to high-level executive communications including quick turnaround responses.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, writing, or other appropriate area of specialization;
• Seven (7) years of directly related experience; and
• Proficient in:
  • advanced oral and written communications;
  • advanced writing and editing;
  • advanced problem solving.
• Must be an excellent writer and speaker. Must have demonstrated ability to think strategically and work collaboratively to implement communications efforts in a complex and dynamic organizational structure. Background in scientific or technical subject matter is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Employees must possess the ability to work in a standard office or conference room setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer.

To visit other company sites, employees must be able to operate a motor vehicle and fly in an aircraft, both of which may require sitting for prolonged periods of time. Employees must possess vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups and over the telephone. Standing in work areas and walking between work areas will be required. This position requires an employee to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb or balance; reach, push, and pull drawers and doors open and closed. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
