JM Longyear, LLC is Hiring a Production & Logistics Manager Near Marquette, MI

About the Role 

The Production and Logistics Manager leads the Company’s Longyear Harvesting and Transportation (LH&T) business unit with responsibility for safety, profit/loss, operations, equipment utilization and maintenance.

Essential Function / Duties

  1. Management
  • Role model of a safe and productive working environment 
  • Assist Senior Management for long-term growth and margin expansion strategy of the business unit, including capital investment recommendations
  • Annual P&L responsibility over internal Harvesting and Transportation business units; to include development of and performance tracking to operating plan, operating goals and objectives; monitor and manage to key metrics and quickly identify and initiate corrective actions as required.
  • Deliver cost savings improvements through process improvement activities including improvements in operating cycle time
  • Develop relationships across the business that help create a culture of continuous improvement and actively participate in activities that will ensure sustainability of improvement initiatives
  • Mentor, coach, and train employees on Operational Excellence standards, tools, and metrics
  • Execute the implementation of capital investments and improvement projects. 
  1. Operations
  • Responsible for E&HS compliance across LH&T operations, equipment, and employees; develop and promote safety standards.
  • Plan, organize, and direct operations to meet and improve upon annual operating targets. 
  • Establish, execute, and maintain appropriate staffing levels for all internal harvesting and transportation functions. Ensure employees are properly trained in company safety and operating standards / expectations.
  • Supervise staff and daily operations to meet or exceed company production, delivery, and economic targets.
  • Effective communication across all levels of the organization to meet or exceed production schedule cycle time, establishing and reaching reliability goals, and monitoring production practices. 
  • Manage and ensure legal compliance with applicable DOT, MIOSHA, BMPs, environmental and certification standards, Federal, State and company regulations.
  • Execution and compliance of relevant contracts: stumpage, road construction, logging and hauling 
  1. Maintenance and modifications
  • Establish and maintain a consistent maintenance program to ensure machinery and fleet is kept in good working condition, conduct regular inspections.
  • Monitor and take corrective action to minimize downtime events.
  • Monitor available technology to keep abreast of opportunities for improvements in manufacturing practices.
  • Maintain all fleet and equipment records

Work Schedule / Supervision

Position: full-time; 40 hours per week; can be substantially more; irregular hours with early start time; travel & overnight stays out of town 

Position Status: Exempt Status; without compensation and without notice 

Recommended Education / Experience

Education: BA/BS degree. Project management, manufacturing discipline, and/or forestry preferred. 

Experience: Minimum of 7 years progressive experience with forest operations, logging and trucking, and/or quality and lean management in a manufacturing or supply chain environment. 

Expected Behaviors / Qualities

Demonstrates leadership experience including P&L and safety responsibility. Team oriented, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to identify and resolve problems and conflicts. Foundation with specific lean tools (5S, facilitation of Kaizen events, Value Stream Mapping, etc.) and Six Sigma and Lean certifications a plus. Proficient in Microsoft suite. 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and the noise level in the work environment may be loud. Other factors are computer station work; working around or in potentially hazardous machinery.
