Job Overview
First and foremost, JCI Jones Chemicals Inc. is a chemical company. We work with hazardous materials in an industrial environment. JCI has a comprehensive Preventative Maintenance Program that was developed ‘In House’ to comply with 29 CRF 1910.119 (OSHA’s Process Safety Management program.) Our maintenance people are expected to learn all of the plant processes and perform preventative maintenance as well as repair work on plant systems. Plant systems will be taught ‘In House’ by one of our Plant Supervisors. This training will be a combination of Class Room and OJT under supervision.
Essential Functions and Qualifications
In the case of our maintenance personnel, discussing the essential functions and qualifications go ‘hand in hand’ as unlike in the case of our Plant employees, we expect our maintenance personnel to come to us with an extensive and diverse background in maintenance related functions. While the intricacies of our compressed gas system can be taught to a maintenance man, we do not expect to have to teach him basic pipe fitting and or the vast majority of the skills outlined below. The basic skill requirements for the maintenance personnel are as follows:
Basic Industrial Electric: The person must be proficient in hooking up electric motors, replacing breakers, replacing light ballasts, and performing basic electrical trouble shooting. The maintenance person must have the ability to research and establish required replacement part and should be able to operate and interpret multi-meters and other electrical trouble shooting equipment. (Plant voltages consist of: 460, 277, 230, 110 and 24 both single and three phase where applicable.)
Basic Instrumentation: Trouble shoot and calibration of gas detectors, flow meters, controllers, and solenoids. The person must have the ability to read and understand ‘Technical Manuals’ and perform basic trouble shooting and or calibration functions.
Basic Pipe Fitting: The person must have a basic understanding of piping systems and the way they are put together. The person must be able to measure, thread and replace existing pipe systems. The person must have a basic understanding of pipe supporting systems. The person must be able to read and understand piping specifications and piping requirements. (Low pressure piping systems consisting of up to 2 threaded carbon steel and PVC / CPVC piping up to 10.)
Basic Mechanical Ability: The person must have a basic ability to disassemble and rebuild (with the aid of a Tech Manual) pumps, heat exchangers and filter systems. The person will be expected to troubleshoot and replace seals on various centrifugal pumps. The person must be able to troubleshoot and replace gaskets on heat exchangers. The person must be able to read and interpret pump curves and calculate flows in GPM and PSI.
Basic Welding: The person must be able to cut and weld carbon steel and perform basic maintenance welding repairs on carbon steel systems. Basic fabrication skills are required as is basic, metal working, and proficiency in the use of various hand tools. (Most welding performed is DC - stick welding. Most cutting operations are performed with Oxy Acetylene rigs.)
Paperwork: Being versed in basic computer skills (Excel and Word) is certainly a plus but not necessarily a requirement. The person must be able to research, via internet, when necessary for parts and or Technical Manuals. The person must be capable of reading, understanding and performing JCI’s - Preventive Maintenance Program. The person must have basic organizational skills.
Safe Work Practices: The person must be willing and capable of wearing the proper ‘Personal Protective Equipment’ required by the Company for the specific jobs being performed. The person must have a basic understanding of Lock Out / Tag Out Procedures, Hot Work Permits and Confined Entry Programs.
Other Helpful Skills: Other skills that are not mandatory but helpful include basic understanding of how compressors, chillers, cooling towers and boilers work; basic carpentry and or masonry skills; forklift or Bobcat skills; planning and estimating; and a basic understanding of PSM (Process Safety Management) and RMP (Risk Management Program) and particularly as it pertains to mechanical integrity performance and recordkeeping requirements.
Our maintenance men are expected to be able to prioritize work assignments in conjunction with the expectations and direction provided by the Branch Manager and being capable of being able to work without being closely supervised.
