The Plainwell facility began operations in 1918 under the Murray Packing company. In the 1960's, it was acquired by Murco and in 1998 by Packerland. In 2000, Packerland was acquired by Smithfield. In 2010, the facility joined the JBS USA family.
Plainwell is the only JBS plant with Modified Atmospheric Packaging (MAP), a packaging process that changes oxygen levels to extend shelf-life. The MAP process is a part of the Plainwell ground beef operation. Plainwell is also one of the few plants that produces ground beef patties. Over one million lbs. (450,000 kg) of beef are produced each day. The Plainwell facility produces biogas in an anaerobic lagoon and uses it in place of natural gas to heat a portion of the water used in the plant. The facility was recognized by the American Meat Institute as a Tier 3 facility for its accomplishments with ISO 14001. Plainwell recently built a $31 million distribution center (85,000 ft²) with a 55,000 box capacity.

Purpose & Scope: Oversee quality and food safety aspects of production
Principle Responsibilities:
  • This position is responsible for assuring regulatory compliance, customer specifications/quality issues, food safety and quality programs within the pant facility.
  • This position reports directly toQuality or HIMP / Slaughter Supervisor of the department
  • This position assists the Quality or HIMP/ Slaughter Supervisor with designated daily tasks.
  • This position performs various quality control functions including but not limited to line inspection, audits.
  • This position participates as a team member with Quality or HIMP / Slaughter employees to review product performance, respond to questions and complaints, and work with team members to ensure yield and efficiency expectations are met.
  • This position assists in the planning, coordination, and direction all quality, regulatory and food safety programs to insure compliance with company, governmental and customer requirements and expectations.
  • This position must assist in the areas of employee management, selection, training development, performance management, staff efficiencies, and yield and efficiency opportunities. Documentation and tracking of identified opportunities.
Qualifications:
  • Dependable and enthusiastic
  • Good people skills, ability to work well with others
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • QA, HACCP and Food Safety experience preferred
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Understanding of USDA requirements (HACCP). Able to rethink and improve business for continued growth.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to provide leadership/motivation to engage employees in the business
Requirements:
Education:Minimum Bachelor’s degree; science related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:Extensive knowledge and technical skill in a variety of QA and production jobs, and in supervisory positions
Special Skills:
  • Knowledge of multiple languages helpful. Computer and organizational skills
  • Ability to make quick, informed decisions. Knowledge of anatomy and microbiology
  • Supervisory and interpersonal skills; ability to handle conflict
Relationships:
Internal:Frequent communication with all levels of employees and management concerning all issues relating to quality of product
External:Regular communication with USDA inspectors. Occasional communication with customers, suppliers, laboratories
Lockout Training Requirements:General Lockout Procedure training
EVALUATION: Employee safe work practices and safety knowledge will be reviewed each year as part of the employee performance evaluations
