JBS International is Hiring a Media Analyst (Content Strategist III) Near Bethesda, MD

Developing creative, accurate, and tailored communications materials and media messages that resonate for a variety of audiences is at the heart of the Media Analyst role at JBS. In this role, you will provide media and public outreach support services and evaluate the impact of those services (e.g., through metrics analyses, data gathering, performance measurement system development, surveys or other instruments that gather user input). In addition, you will craft compelling and tailored health messages, develop high-impact media campaigns to promote public health initiatives, and identify innovations that deliver essential health through an array of media formats and channels. You will join a motivated team of researchers, content developers, multimedia specialists, and communications professionals passionate about creating and sustaining positive changes in public health and well-being that improve the lives of real people every day. Working directly with a federal client team and JBS project staff, you’ll apply your communications knowledge, skills, and proven expertise to the core functions of this position: 

  • Develop evidence-based, science-driven, culturally responsive public health communication strategies, media plans, and partnership outreach and engagement tactics
  • Apply current evidence and best practices to the development, dissemination, promotion, and evaluation of content related to public health communications initiatives
  • Lead media outreach, monitoring, and analytic activities across traditional, digital, and social channels (including use of media monitoring platforms such as Cision, HootSuite, Google Analytics, etc.); develop metrics summary reports for clients 
  • Develop communications materials such as talking points, speeches, and other content (e.g., press releases, media advisories, matte and newsletter articles, blog posts, social media messages, web content, multimedia products) per federal plain language guidelines
  • Plan, develop, schedule, and publish actionable public health messages that align with client priorities and respond to audience needs and preferences
  • Manage media relations: Cultivate a network of media contacts, develop and manage curated reporter lists, facilitate interview requests, provide media training and industry briefs, conduct media outreach and pitching to national media outlets, and handle inquiries via client group email/web/social channels
  • Spearhead the development, testing, and strategic dissemination of SEO-optimized promotional materials that garner consistent engagement and deliver key messages to public health policy makers, researchers, the media, and the general public
  • Conduct landscape analyses, environmental scans, and audience needs assessments
  • Facilitate large-scale radio and satellite media tours, livestreams, and other live media events
  • Purchase media ad buys and engage high-visibility celebrities, influencers, and industry leaders to increase campaign impact

Our ideal candidate will have deep applied experience in the above functions and will:

  • Navigate the federal contracting environment with skill, including the ability to support the development of proposals, and work effectively and professionally with clients (experience supporting a federal contract for NIH or other public health government agency such as CDC, CMS, FDA, HRSA, or SAMHSA is preferred) 
  • Demonstrate experience in health-focused communications, media relations, journalism, and/or social and other new media (experience with content related to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, mental health, substance misuse, and other chronic diseases--e.g., of the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood-preferred)
  • Possess and leverage established professional networks of health-focused reporters, outlet managers, and other media influencers
  • Demonstrate success in communications efforts targeting diverse audiences including consumers (especially underserved/disenfranchised segments) and health professionals 
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply social marketing and behavior change principles that maximize reach, engagement, and impact

Ability to obtain public trust clearance: Candidate must receive a PIV card/badge from a sponsoring NIH Institute to conduct essential job functions

LOCATION: Hybrid telework/JBS’s North Bethesda office (or client site in Bethesda, if required onsite 3 days a week)

CORE COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • High degree of organization, attention to detail, timelines, and record keeping
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, responsive working relationships with staff and clients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of scientific/academic literature databases and the ability to search, vet, synthesize, and apply evidence from the literature in content development and project practices
  • Ability to manage work and self effectively and independently while remaining flexible and actively collaborating with colleagues
  • Ability to handle numerous tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Consistent demonstration of initiative and ongoing efforts to expand job knowledge
  • Skills in identifying issues and developing effective, innovative solutions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; working knowledge of design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud and media monitoring tools preferred

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media, communications, or related field; a combination of a degree in one of these areas and a degree, certification, or equivalent work experience in health, social science, or a medical specialty is strongly preferred

Language: English fluency (oral and written)

Experience: 

  • At least 5 years of professional experience working in media relations, journalism, or new media, facilitation of interview requests and expertise writing in and editing multimedia content in plain language for the public and media
  • Experience in strategic communications planning, media campaign execution, media ad buys, media monitoring tools, and a range of social media platforms 
  • Success in producing high-quality deliverables in a fast-paced collaborative environment

Knowledge: Journalism, media studies, or health communications; media management; evidence-based communications theory and practice; and project coordination
