Initial patient evaluation
Reviews Physician's referral (prescription) and patient's condition and medical records to help determine occupational therapy treatment required.
Consulting with patients to learn about their physical, or mental condition and symptoms and developing a treatment plan
Tests and measures patient's strength, ROM, quality of movement, motor development, sensory perception, functional, prevocational, vocational and homemaking skills as part of activities of daily living and records findings to develop or revise treatment programs.
Communicate a plan using treatment and educational techniques to promote independence in all functional activities of daily living.
Plans and prepares written treatment plan based on evaluation of patient data.
Provide ongoing patient treatment
Teaches individuals skills and techniques required for participation in activities.
Administer treatments involving use of neuromuscular re-education, visual motor skills, cognitive rehabilitation, sensory integration, therapeutic exercise and manual therapy techniques.
Use equipment and devices to assist patients manage activities of daily living
Instructs, motivates, and assists patient to perform various activities of daily living and in use of adaptive equipment to achieve independence.
Administers treatments involving application of physical agents.
Coordinates participation in sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help patients with injuries and disabilities.
Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages of development and recovery, adjusting treatments to achieve maximum benefit.
Administers manual techniques, exercises and modalities to relieve pain and improve or maintain function.
Evaluates for, fits, fabricates and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices.
Provides accurate and timely treatment documentation
Records treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart or enters information into electronic medical record in a timely fashion.
Document time spent with patient and apply appropriate concepts of billing and coding for submission to insurance payors.
Confers with Physician and other practitioners in a timely and proper manner to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate occupational therapy treatment with other aspects of patient's health care.
Other Duties
Orients, instructs, and directs work activities of assistants, aides, and students.
Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities.
