JOB SUMMARY

The Van Driver plays a crucial role in ensuring reliable and courteous transportation services for both Riis Settlement participants and agency staff. This entails operating either an 8-10 passenger or 22 passenger van along assigned routes, facilitating transportation to various destinations.

In addition to driving responsibilities, the Van Driver also handles the transportation of boxes and deliveries to and from the agency. During times when not engaged in driving duties, the Van Driver's role extends to supporting program staff in various activities. These include assisting in identifying additional event locations for trips and actively participating in outreach initiatives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates assigned vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Assists passengers, including handicapped, in and out of the vehicle; operate ramps and lifts as required.
  • Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to plan the most efficient route service for participants.
  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned vehicle(s) both inside and out.
  • Keeps accurate records of trips, participant contributions, vehicle maintenance, fuel expenses, incident/accident reports, vehicle conditions, and other requested records.
  • Coordinate major or periodic vehicle maintenance schedules with management and staff to minimize service disruptions.
  • Transport agency boxes and deliveries as required.
  • Pick up necessary supplies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Conduct tasks such as interacting with older adults to discover potential trip destinations, enhance scheduling, recruit older adults for program participation, and handle phone inquiries.
  • Work with program staff conducting outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with program staff to compile an annual list of common destinations.
  • Provide assistance with general grounds maintenance and other tasks directed by the NNORC Director.
  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


STATEMENT OF SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Must have a clean driver’s license record, and possess a CDL 8 (commercial driver’s license)
  • Willingness and ability to engage in physical tasks and work flexible hours.
  • Basic working knowledge of and proficiency in navigation around NYC.
  • Must have knowledge of all rules and regulation of the DMV.

REQUIREMENT

  • Must pass pre-employment background check including but not limited to criminal background check.

  • The job requires carrying items weighing less than fifty pounds.

Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is a community based non-profit organization that offers comprehensive services to the youth, adults, seniors and families in the Western Queens community. The resources, opportunities and support we provide serve as a catalyst for community members to reach their greatest potential and achieve social and economic self-sufficiency. Across our eight program sites, we provide vital services to thousands of community members each year. HISTORY: Jacob A. Riis was a native of Ribe, Denmark, and came to New York City in 1870. Riis's book, "How the Other Half Liv...es" exposed conditions previously thought not to exist in America. He established the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House to meet the needs of newly arrived immigrants. In 1897, the Settlement House moved into its first home at 48 Henry St. in lower east Manhattan. Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House continued to diversify activities, broadening the scope of activities to include athletics,citizenship classes, and drama. In the 1940s and 50s, the Settlement House began to offer programs for residents of public housing developments in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. At the same time, the original Settlement House building was sold, and in 1950, Jacob A. Riis Settlement House moved all of its activities to the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens. More
