GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, performs specialized administrative and technical work in coordinating and
participating in the County's fire safety program. Work involves inspecting buildings for fire hazards and enforcing
County and State fire codes, investigating fires of suspicious origins, and assisting in firefighting and hazardous
material response operations. Employee must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in all
phases of work. Employee must also exercise professionalism, courtesy, and firmness in contact with property
owners and developers, responders, the general public, and the media. Reports to the Fire Marshal.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Conducts fire and life safety inspections of new and existing commercial establishments and multi-family
residences to determine the existence of fire hazards, the efficiency of fire protection equipment and general
compliance with state and county fire codes and fire prevention standards; maintains knowledge of changes or
additions to state and County fire codes. Investigates complaints of fire safety hazards, compiling data and
ordering actions to comply with codes and ordinances, as applicable

Conducts review and technical inspections of fire detection and suppression systems for conformance with County
fire codes and state building codes; inspects all work upon completion, giving final approval to work that meets
applicable codes.

Inspects and conducts investigations (along with other officials) of fires of suspicious nature or involving injury
or death to determine their cause; collects physical evidence, sketches fire scene, interrogates witnesses or
suspects; prepares documentation of all investigative actions for presentation in criminal or civil court; testifies in
court, as necessary.

Responds with other agencies to emergency response calls, performing firefighting or hazardous materials
response work, as necessary.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist with Emergency Management as requested.

Delivers visual demonstrations, presentations, and performs other public relations and educational activities in
programs to improve fire prevention and safety.

Maintains fire investigation equipment and vehicles; maintains individual fire protective equipment and
respirators.

Performs other related work as required.

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the types of industrial and commercial operations in the county and any related
potential hazards.

Thorough knowledge of the methods of readily ascertaining the presence of existing or potential fire hazards.

Thorough knowledge of the laws, codes, regulations, principles and practices regarding fire prevention.

Thorough knowledge of fire equipment operation and maintenance, and skill in its operation.

Thorough knowledge of specialized fire database program and ability to use program to develop fire reports
and data.

Considerable knowledge of the cause and origins of fire and scientific detection principles.

Skilled in collaborative conflict resolution.

Ability to read, interpret and apply a wide variety of codes, policies, procedures, and regulations.

Ability to prepare reports and make effective public presentations.

Ability to react quickly, effectively, and professionally in emergency situations.

Ability to use sound judgment and determine best options and decisions for handling emergency matters.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement agencies, fire
departments, public officials, hospitals, schools, and general public.

Ability to enforce codes and laws with firmness and fairness.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from High School supplemented by special training in Firefighting, Fire Inspection/Service work,
Emergency Management and/or Hazardous Materials Management, and at least four (4) years related experience;
or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and
abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License; Possession of Level II Certification from the North Carolina
Code Officials Qualification Board in Fire Prevention of the North Carolina Building Code within reasonable
period after hiring. Ability to obtain Fire/Arson Investigator Certification within four (4) years after hire and Fire
Educator Certification within two (2) years after hire. Prefer certification in at least one (1) of the following:
Certification as a Haz-Mat Responder Operations Level, State Certified Firefighter, and/or State Certified Fire
Instructor.

This position is designated as an authorized Motor Vehicle Operator for Iredell County and requires adherence to
the Iredell County Vehicle Operations Policy.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling,
crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing,
and perform repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force
frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly.

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, for extensive reading and work with figures; to operate a
computer, to inspect fire sites, to use measuring devices, to operate a motor vehicle; and to determine accuracy and
neatness of work.
