Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The VP, Director, Data Visualization is a core leader within the Data Visualization Team, a multidisciplinary collaboration that specializes in data visualization and offers expertise in data mining, information design, and visual storytelling. The VP, Data Visualization Director works with Creative and Medical partners to oversee the work of data visualization specialists and data designers on the team.
The VP, Director, Data Visualization is responsible for the innovative translation of complex content into effective visualizations - helping the team design, develop, and deliver a wide range of communication materials for our healthcare clients. As a leader, they set the standard, ensuring that every data visualization generated by the team is smart, simplified, and story-driven in the most captivating way possible.
The VP, Director is also responsible for managing the team's business, ensuring a robust pipeline of work (through organic and new business opportunities), maximizing employee utilization and career growth, and ensuring that the Data Visualization Capability at IPG Health remains a leading-edge Network differentiator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Data Visualization | Leads the team to deliver beautiful visual stories; Defines the direction for visual content approaches, including infographics, maps, charts, and graphs, to transform health data into digestible compelling visuals and experiences.
Data Analysis | Leads the team to uncover new angles in the data. Helps define the direction for the team to interrogate, interpret, and identify meaningful insights from health data.
Cross Functional Collaboration | Leads the team, in collaboration with teams across the IPG Health network, to support strategic, data-driven storytelling across brands.
Team Management & Development | Provides mentorship & performance management of team. Demonstrates ability to hire and retain highly capable people while fostering inclusive and positive culture.
Agency and Culture | Participates in internal and external initiatives to elevate agency operations, community, and brand.
JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data Visualization
  • Partner with Agency Brand Creatives to deliver data visualizations that align with the brand's identity and set industry standards.
  • Oversees generation of a wide range of thought-provoking information design and recommended data structure using our core principles (smart, simplified, and story-driven)
  • Help team to troubleshoot and navigate feedback (internally and externally) to ensure that the work continues to be strong, even with multiple rounds of revisions.
  • Proactively explore new and innovative visual approaches and techniques for data storytelling - to share back with the group and incorporate into best practices.
Data Analysis
  • Partner with Agency Brand Medical and Strategy colleagues to identify and define the data objectives that best serve the brand's story.
  • Guides team to generate novel data-focused stories to complement and/or enhance brand team work.
  • Guides team to analyze and translate data into visual content, including infographics, charts and graphs, to meet communication objectives.
  • Provide expertise and team POV in response to client requests for data recommendations.
Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Champion and defend the work, internally and externally, ensuring that the Data Visualization Capability at IPG Health remains a leading-edge Network differentiator.
  • Collaborate with teams across the IPG Health network and support strategic, data-driven storytelling across brands.
  • Partner with our design / brand production team for miscellaneous digital assets and support to ensure thoughtful and seamless execution of client deliverables.
Talent Management & Development
  • Leads Data Visualization teams, providing mentorship, performance management, and career development.
  • Responsible for hiring, staffing, career development, and full life-cycle talent management for direct team (e.g. delivering feedback, annual reviews, general and performance management).
  • Demonstrates leadership, empathy and professionalism in communications.
Agency and Culture
  • Acts as ambassador for the agency at industry events.
  • Participates and/or lead agency initiatives outside of day-to-day responsibilities to elevate employee experience and to elevate employee and department experience.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining the reputation of the company as a creative leader in
  • healthcare advertising.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating captivating and original data visualization design prowess across a range of media.
  • Ability to turn complex concepts and data into clear visuals and to lead teams in the pursuit of most creative solutions.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign required. Hand Illustration/sketching skills a strong plus.
  • Strong understanding and point of view on identity, typography, color, and layout for digital and traditional media.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design in data visualization and interactivity. Knowledge of new media and technology a plus.
  • Familiarity with current web standards, browser compatibility, HTML 5 and CSS design.
  • Experience working with data visualization tools, such as Datawrapper, Flourish, Power BI and Tableau.
  • Knowledge of JavaScript (experience with React, jQuery are a plus.
  • Knowledge of visualization tools such as D3 or other libraries(e.g. Angular, Three.js, WebGL, and QGIS) also a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office applications) or equivalent programs.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • 10 years - Data visualization, Infographics/Graphic Design, and Interactive Visual Storytelling
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's Degree, Graphic Design, Communication Design, Fine Arts, Information Design, Information Science, Data Science, or related area preferred
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Data Visualization (Preferred)
Salary
$159,000 to $182,850 annually
The salary range for this position is noted within this job posting. Where an employee or prospective employee is paid within this range will depend on, among other factors, actual ranges for current/former employees in the subject position; market considerations; budgetary considerations; tenure and standing with the company (applicable to current employees); as well as the employee's/applicant's background, pertinent experience, and qualifications.
