Job Title: New Roots Food Access Intern

SCOPE OF WORK: The IRC Phoenix New Roots Program’s focus is to help newly arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and navigate their new food systems. The New Roots Food Access Intern will help IRC staff in outreach, recruitment and facilitation of the “Navigating a New Food System” program as well as operation of the New Roots CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Produce Box program at CamelBackyard. This internship is located in multiple locations throughout the valley depending on client needs and does potentially require Saturday availability. Intern will work directly with the New Roots Local Food Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist New Roots staff in managing the CSA produce box program at CamelBackyard
• Coordinate with New Roots growers to aggregate produce
• Conduct outreach and provide nutrition education resources to the community
• Recruit and enroll refugee clients in Navigating a New Food System program
• Facilitate interactive training modules for Navigating a New Food System Program
• Administer client surveys
• Support community engagement and educational activities
• Assist the New Roots Local Food Coordinator with ongoing program tasks as needed

• Build communication skills while engaging customers and community members
• Learn about nutrition programming throughout the valley
• Develop a working knowledge of how to assist refugee clients in learning about the American food system
• Implement logistical planning and time management skills in a dynamic environment
• Design curriculum to expand client mastery of the “Navigating a New Food System” program
• Build outreach and networking skills in working with a predominantly non-English speaking population

REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to obtain an AZ Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
• Bachelor’s degree or coursework in local food systems, community development, nutrition, public health or other related field
• Demonstrated experience in community engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities and related to food access or nutrition, preferred
• Prior experience teaching or facilitating workshops/trainings preferred
• Prior experience working with refugees, immigrant or pre-literate populations in non-traditional setting preferred
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
• A flexible schedule and ability to travel to various offsite locations
• Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired

Note: This is an unpaid internship. Intern must commit to at least 10-15 hours per week for a 3-month minimum. Internship hours are completed between Monday and Friday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM and may require some Saturday availability for Farm Stand activities.
