Job Description

IRC Background:

 Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., IRC provides assistance to refugees resettling here through 27 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist refugees from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City (IRC SLC) opened it office in 1994 and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 15-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees. 

Job Overview: The College and Career Readiness Coordinator coordinates the implementation of the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Program under the supervision of the Youth Program Supervisor. The CCR program serves over 100 Refugee and New American youth ages 15-24 annually throughout Salt Lake City, UT. Within the CCR program this position also ensures the implementation of the Success Coaching and Mentoring program which supervises a team of volunteer and intern Student Success Coaches who work directly with youth and caregivers to implement program activities including life skills development, social and emotional asset development, individualized coaching for college and career readiness, and makes referrals as well as conducts follow up support. School Success Coaches also provide in-depth individualized assessment, goal setting and service planning and implementation focused on academic progress and achievement, social adjustment, and school completion of eligible youth. The College and Career Readiness Coordinator is responsible for program design, implementation, evaluation, and reporting as well as supervision of the College and Career Readiness Program specialist. The College and Career Readiness Coordinator also coordinates closely with the other members of the Education & Youth teams to ensure coordination and seamless support for families.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program leadership

  • Plan School Success Coaching activities in alignment with the program design and deliverables
  • Assign and monitor School Success Coach caseloads to ensure high quality service delivery
  • Conduct a monthly Student Success Coaching Orientation for new youth and their caregivers

Intern/staff management

  • Provides supervision, support, and regular feedback on progress and performance for College and Career Readiness Specialist
  • Recruit a team of volunteers and/or Social Work student interns to serve as School Success Coaches to support caseloads of up to 15 students each
  • Provide training, coaching, and field instruction to School Success coaches to ensure high quality service delivery, meet contractual obligations, and ensure safeguarding
  • Support School Success Coaches to navigate challenges associated with school enrolment, client assessment, individualized service planning and implementation, group workshops, and documentation through weekly supervision meetings

Program Documentation

  • Maintain program information and data collection systems in compliance with IRC standards and contractual obligations, contribute to strengthening program monitoring
  • Ensure program participants are properly enrolled and files are up to date
  • Ensure program data is consistently collected and entered in ETO and Podio and are in accordance with contractual obligations
  • Contribute to program reporting for internal and external purposes

Team coordination

  • Collaborate and communicate with Youth Programs team members and other office colleagues to ensure wraparound support for families served across departments
  • Ensure referrals across internal IRC SLC programs are followed up
  • Provide support and expertise to other youth programs and office teams related to supporting youth and family needs

Program Design and Partnership Building:

  • Design and lead professional development to school staff and administrators on the needs and approaches specific to refugee youth.
  • Design and curate curriculum, lesson plans, and resources to be used by coaches and/or in CCR workshops in Social Emotional Asset Development (SEAD) and life skills development
  • Proactively engage with local partners including local college’s administrators and faculty, English Learning centers, and internal IRC in Salt Lake City partners, and other stakeholders.

Administrative and General Support:

  • Case noting all CCR related services and/or reviewing teams case notes for quality and compliance.
  • Attend Youth Education Team and Youth Community of Practice meetings and complete administrative duties, including but not limited to reporting, timesheets, and expense reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Masters of Social Work or Licensed Social Worker preferred
  • Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with children and youth in educational and social programs
  • A minimum of 1 year experience supervising staff or volunteers preferred
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant children and families required
  • Strong knowledge of the local education systems and providers and the local public school system highly desirable
  • Experience with managing caseloads, service planning and implementation in a social services setting
  • Knowledge of child and youth development and effective family engagement techniques
  • Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal; fluency in a client language preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work as a team leader and team member in a cross-cultural environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle with current insurance coverage

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, social work or related field of study preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two years related professional experience in an education or social services setting, including experience with family engagement in education or youth case management
  • Experience working in local education systems.
  • Experience providing individualized support to foreign-born youth and families, who recently arrived in the US.
  • Experience with program design, program implementation, and monitoring and evaluation.

  • Must be proactive and feel comfortable taking the lead.
  • Reliable, professional, resourceful, team-oriented and sensitive to cultural differences.
  • Fluency in English, spoken and written.

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
